People often warn against remaking classic films, and for good reason – especially in the horror genre. Hollywood frequently revisits old ideas, but these remakes often fall short of the originals. However, every now and then, a remake manages to be just as good, or even better. A prime example is a well-known horror remake from the early 2000s that’s now available to stream on Paramount+.
Fans of scary movies can now watch Gore Verbinski’s The Ring on Paramount+. The critically acclaimed horror remake, starring Naomi Watts, arrived on the streaming service December 1st. It’s considered one of the best remakes ever made, earning a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Ring is based on the 1998 Japanese film Ringu, which itself came from Koji Suzuki’s 1991 novel. The story follows journalist Rachel Keller as she tries to uncover the truth behind a terrifying videotape. Anyone who watches the tape supposedly dies seven days later, and Keller finds herself in a desperate fight for survival after viewing it.
The Ring Is One of the Scariest Movies Ever
If you’re in the mood for a truly frightening movie, The Ring is an excellent choice. Everything about it – from the dark, muted colors to the unsettling sound effects – creates a consistently creepy and suspenseful atmosphere. Director Verbinski masterfully builds tension by not relying on cheap jump scares, instead opting for carefully timed reveals and a growing sense of dread. This approach resulted in some of the most iconic and terrifying scenes in recent horror history, like the unforgettable image of Samara emerging from the television.
What made the remake of The Ring so effective wasn’t cheap thrills or graphic violence, but a focus on building a genuinely creepy and unsettling mood. Naomi Watts’ strong performance as the lead character was key, making the supernatural events feel real because she portrayed someone ordinary caught in extraordinary circumstances. The film also brilliantly adapted the original Japanese story for American viewers, keeping the core plot and frightening atmosphere while still feeling fresh. The Ring became a classic horror film and importantly, it introduced American audiences to Japanese horror, opening the door for other remakes like The Grudge and Dark Water.
What’s New on Paramount+?
I was so excited to see The Ring added to Paramount+ this December! It was just one of a ton of great movies and shows that dropped on the 1st, alongside titles like Annihilation, Disturbia, Fargo, and some fun comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Scary Movie 2. They also added some classics like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Coneheads, Miracle on 34th Street, and even Paddington – perfect for a cozy December watch!
