As a huge movie fan, I’ve been noticing Paramount has been having a tough time lately. Their big franchises – Transformers, Scream, and even Mission: Impossible – just aren’t hitting the same way they used to. Transformers: One didn’t really bring the spark back, Scream was plagued with issues, and it feels like the Mission: Impossible series might be wrapping up. They’ve still got Sonic the Hedgehog and A Quiet Place, which are doing well, but honestly, Paramount really needs to find some fresh, exciting new movies to keep audiences coming back to theaters.
As a fan, I’m really hoping Paramount starts digging into some of its older properties. There’s so much potential! We’ve been waiting for a World War Z sequel for ages, and a new Star Trek movie would be huge. But honestly, there’s one sci-fi series that I think is just perfect for a revival, and I can’t wait to see if they go for it.
Dan Trachtenberg’s New Paramount Deal Means That Cloverfield Can Finally Come Back

Dan Trachtenberg is a highly sought-after director in Hollywood, largely due to his success with Disney. He directed Prey, a prequel that successfully revived the Predator franchise. His follow-up work, Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands, has solidified the franchise’s modern revival, restoring its popularity to levels not seen since the 1990s.
Dan Trachtenberg has entered a three-year agreement with Paramount Pictures to produce films intended for movie theaters. While Paramount hasn’t announced specific projects, Trachtenberg and his partner, Ben Rosenblatt, will be developing new movies. Since Trachtenberg can’t continue working on Predator – Disney owns that franchise – Cloverfield seems like a natural fit for his next big sci-fi project at Paramount.
Before directing the recent Predator film for Disney, Trachtenberg made his directorial debut with 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane. This movie was key in turning Cloverfield into a series of standalone stories, moving away from direct sequels to the original 2008 film. While not as widely known as the first Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane received similar, or even better, reviews from critics. Trachtenberg didn’t work on any further Cloverfield projects, and the franchise later released the poorly received The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018.
The Cloverfield franchise remains popular, and a revival would be significant for Paramount. Director Matt Reeves has a track record of successfully rebooting established alien film series after disappointing installments, making him a strong candidate to lead a new Cloverfield project. Given his ability to deliver a great Cloverfield film, it would be a mistake for Paramount not to include him in the franchise’s future plans.
What Is Going On With The Next Cloverfield Movie?

The future of the Cloverfield franchise has been uncertain since The Cloverfield Paradox, and Paramount Pictures doesn’t seem to have a clear plan for it. Several sequels were considered – one to the original Cloverfield and another to 10 Cloverfield Lane – and talked about in the late 2010s. At one point in 2018, plans were confirmed to bring together the characters played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in a future installment.
Films like Overlord and A Quiet Place were initially connected to the Cloverfield universe, but eventually became their own separate series. Now, a true Cloverfield sequel is in the works. Joe Barton began writing the script in January 2021, and Babak Anvari was set to direct as of 2022. However, in 2023, Matt Reeves decided to stop sharing updates about the film’s progress to maintain the same sense of mystery as the first movie.
A direct sequel to the original Cloverfield is finally in the works, indicating Paramount’s desire to revive the franchise. Although a follow-up to 10 Cloverfield Lane was previously considered, it was ultimately abandoned. Now that director Dan Trachtenberg is collaborating with Paramount again, it’s a great chance to revisit that idea. The most effective way to expand the story would be a sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane developed with Trachtenberg’s involvement, creating a connected narrative alongside the original Cloverfield films.
By 2028, it will have been a decade since the last Cloverfield movie, which is a significant gap. There’s no word yet on when the next Cloverfield project will come out, but it really needs to be excellent to breathe new life into the series. Director Matt Trachtenberg could be key to making that happen, and hopefully Paramount can deliver.
