I’m so glad Payday 2 is still going strong! It all started back in the late 2000s with the first game, Payday: The Heist, on PS3 and PC. The developers at Overkill were clearly inspired by movies like The Dark Knight and Heat – it was all about pulling off bank heists! You played as one of four robbers, trying to manage crowds and fight off the police while grabbing as much cash as possible. That first game did really well, but Payday 2 blew it out of the water. It’s been a huge success for over ten years now, with constant updates, versions for different consoles, and tons of extra content to play.
The excitement around Payday 2 faded when Payday 3 launched, but unfortunately, players haven’t embraced the new game. Currently, Payday 3‘s 24-hour peak player count is under 600, which is a significant drop for a sequel to such a popular co-op game released just a couple of years ago. Adding to the disappointment, Payday 2 remains incredibly popular, recently reaching a 24-hour peak of over 27,000 players – even though it’s no longer being updated. It’s clear that fans still strongly prefer the original game.
Payday 2 to Get New Updates
Because of strong support from players, the developers of Payday 2 are changing their plans. They’re working with Sidetrack Games to release updates and fix problems with the game. These updates will likely focus on improving the player experience, rather than adding major new features, though more significant updates could be announced in the future. This is good news, as it means Payday 2 will continue to receive support and improvements.
I’m so excited to share some amazing news! The team at Sidetrack Games is now helping to support Payday 2 on PC, and I seriously think this is fantastic. They’ve actually come from the modding community, so they really understand the game and what we players want. I have total faith they’ll bring a fresh energy and get things moving again! The first update is coming out on October 23rd, and they’re starting with quality-of-life improvements – which is exactly what we need right now!

The team developing updates for Payday 2 already has experience with the game’s engine, as they previously worked on Raid: World War II, which used the same technology. Their first update for Payday 2 is coming out tomorrow, October 23rd, and will focus on making the game more stable and improving how players experience it. While Starbreeze will continue working on Payday 3, Sidetrack will be responsible for maintaining and improving Payday 2.
It’s fantastic that this older game is still getting support, even though the publisher is likely prioritizing their newest title. This is great news for fans and hopefully a successful collaboration for everyone involved.
