Comic books have greatly influenced the world of film. Their detailed and visually engaging stories provide a lot of material for movies. While superhero comics – especially those adapted into the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe – often come to mind, many other comics have also been turned into films. Think of Men in Black, V for Vendetta, and 300 – all of which started as comics. Now, a fantastic movie that you might not know began as a comic is coming to Peacock.
Released in 2002, Road to Perdition is considered one of Tom Hanks’ finest performances. This film, adapted from the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name, takes place during the Great Depression. It tells the story of Michael Sullivan, a mob enforcer played by Hanks, and his son as they pursue revenge on the man who killed their family. The movie boasts an impressive cast, including Jude Law, Stanley Tucci, Daniel Craig, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and features Paul Newman’s final on-screen theatrical role. Newman received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his performance. Road to Perdition will be available to stream on Peacock starting April 1st.
Road to Perdition Has a Surprising Connection to Superman (That Has Nothing to Do With the Comics)
“Road to Perdition” is a stunning film, both visually and emotionally. The cinematography, by Conrad L. Hall, was Oscar-winning. The story follows a father, Sullivan, and his son Michael on a journey that’s as much about healing from a family tragedy as it is about escaping a dangerous life. It powerfully explores the impact of violence and the complex bond between fathers and sons.
Despite being well-received by critics and performing well in theaters, what’s particularly noteworthy about the film Road to Perdition today, over two decades later, is its unexpected link to a famous character—one who doesn’t even originate in comic books. Tyler Hoechlin, who played Michael Sullivan’s son, received a Critics’ Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Performer for his role. Fourteen years after Road to Perdition came out, Hoechlin went on to become known for playing Clark Kent/Superman in Supergirl and Superman & Lois. Though the two roles are in very different genres—crime comics versus superheroes—it’s a fascinating connection in Hoechlin’s acting career.
