Everyone loves animated movies, but only a few are considered truly great. A classic film, recently added to Peacock, is one of those standouts, and it was also one of the first projects from what is now a leading animation studio.
The animated movie The Prince of Egypt became available on Peacock on April 1st, right before Easter. Released in 1998 as DreamWorks Animation’s second and first traditionally animated film, it’s still considered one of the best animated movies of all time by both critics and viewers. The film is a musical adaptation of the story of Exodus, telling the story of Moses’ life from his early days as an Egyptian prince to his destiny as the leader of the Israelites.
The Prince of Egypt Established DreamWorks Animation as a Serious Competitor to Disney
While films like Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon later became bigger successes for DreamWorks, The Prince of Egypt was a turning point for the studio, proving they could create movies with the same quality and artistic merit as Disney. It successfully blended family-friendly entertainment with more sophisticated storytelling, using a grand and dramatic style that didn’t rely on typical animated clichés like talking animals or silly sidekicks. The film was also visually impressive, and still looks fantastic today. The Prince of Egypt combined classic hand-drawn animation with early computer graphics to reach Disney’s artistic and technical standards, resulting in memorable scenes like the parting of the Red Sea.
As a huge animation fan, I remember when The Prince of Egypt came out and it was a massive deal for DreamWorks. It wasn’t just a critical success – earning a solid 79% from critics and an even better 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – but it also made over $218 million worldwide! That made it the most successful non-Disney animated film at the time, and it even won an Oscar for “When You Believe.” Honestly, it really put DreamWorks on the map and proved they could compete with the big players, paving the way for hits like Shrek later on. It set the bar incredibly high, and they definitely cleared it.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock has added a bunch of new movies and shows to its streaming library! Families can now enjoy titles like Bee Movie, Captain Underpants, the first three Kung Fu Panda films, and the classic Space Jam. For adults, they’ve added movies such as Crocodile Dundee, Face/Off, Liar, Liar, Pulp Fiction, and Straight Outta Compton.
