Peacock Just Added Two All-Time Great Movies at Once

In August 2025, NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, has added not one, but two all-time great films from the past. Among the new movies available on Peacock this month, you can find what many consider to be the best films of both 1994 and 1997. Unfortunately, NBC hasn’t shared how long these classic movies will be available for free with a Peacock subscription. Historically, they don’t reveal such details, but given that they were added on August 1st, it seems likely they’ll stick around for some time.

1997’s Good Will Hunting is the first of the two newly mentioned Peacock films. This film was directed by Gus Van Sant and has remained his most recognized work to this day. In the creation of this drama, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who also co-wrote the movie, provided significant assistance. Alongside Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, Stellan Skarsgard, and Matt Damon himself, the film’s cast brought this story to life.

On a modest budget of $10 million, Good Will Hunting garnered an impressive box office revenue of $225.9 million. Moreover, it was nominated for nine awards at the 70th Academy Awards that year, among them Best Picture. This film is often hailed as one of the finest from the ’90s and enjoys a high rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Another significant Peacock movie release is Frank Darabont’s 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption, a director renowned for his dramatic works as well. Adapted from Stephen King’s novel “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” this American prison drama initially underperformed in 1994, grossing $73.3 million against a production budget of $25 million. However, it saw a resurgence following seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Prior to this recognition, it had only managed to earn $16 million at the box office.

1995’s The Shawshank Redemption, featuring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, was the most rented film that year and was later selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the U.S. Library of Congress in 2015.

For individuals not currently subscribed to Peacock but expressing interest, they can opt for a monthly plan priced at $10.99, which includes advertisements. If they prefer an ad-free experience, the subscription cost is $16.99 per month.
