The upcoming Peacock series will explore the origins of Jason Voorhees, serving as a prequel to the classic horror film Friday the 13th. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane recently shared a new image, giving fans their first glimpse of a young Jason in the series.
Kane posted a picture on Instagram hinting at news coming Monday about Crystal Lake. The caption included the iconic phrase, “We’re all doomed,” a reference to a line spoken by Crazy Ralph in the original Friday the 13th movie. The image shows the back of young Jason’s head, displaying the deformed appearance seen in flashback scenes throughout the Friday the 13th films. You can see the post below.
Jason Voorhees Is Finally Returning in Peacock’s Prequel Series
The upcoming film, Crystal Lake, serves as a backstory and will center around Linda Cardellini’s portrayal of Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother. The original Friday the 13th showed Pamela (played by Betsy Palmer) going on a killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake after learning they planned to reopen it. Years before, her son Jason (Ari Lehman) tragically drowned in the lake due to the counselors’ negligence. Driven by grief and a desire to prevent other mothers from experiencing the same loss, Pamela killed several counselors, effectively shutting down the camp and vowing to keep it closed forever.
Callum Vinson is joining the cast of the upcoming prequel. However, don’t expect to see the adult Jason Voorhees with his signature hockey mask right away. In the history of Friday the 13th, Jason doesn’t start wearing the mask until the third movie, after his mother, Pamela, has died. While it’s unlikely he’ll be seen in the mask often, quick scenes showing him with it – either as a flash-forward or a hint of what’s to come – are still a possibility.
Fans Have Waited Many Years for Jason’s Official Return
Aside from video games, Jason Voorhees hasn’t appeared in a new Friday the 13th movie or series since the 2009 reboot. A long-running legal battle over the rights to the character kept him off-screen for years, but those issues are now settled. We can expect to see Jason in several upcoming projects, beginning with the Crystal Lake series on Peacock. There’s also talk of a new movie being developed, which would be the thirteenth film in the franchise.
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Crystal Lake, but it’s anticipated to be available on Peacock later this year.
