For Cillian Murphy, there needed to be a really, really good reason to bring Peaky Blinders back.
The show ‘The Immortal Man’ felt worthwhile to Cillian Murphy, both as an actor and producer, because he believed it delivered a finale that was as powerful, or even better, than the iconic ending of ‘Peaky Blinders’ season 6, where Tommy Shelby famously rode off into the sunset.
He’s returning next week, and he won’t be alone! Several beloved characters from Steven Knight’s popular BBC show are also coming back, along with some exciting new additions.
At a Peaky Blinders event at the BFI on Friday night, hosted by Edith Bowman, Cillian Murphy spoke with reporters, including those from TopMob, about the challenges of bringing Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders back for the film.
“I felt a real duty to the fans, to the fan base, who, I think, made the thing that it is.
The actor wondered how to make the story compelling after setting it in 1919, following the end of World War I. He realized the key was to focus on the characters’ family relationships.
The storyline is fantastic, and Steve is a master storyteller, but what really stood out was the importance of family. Family has always been central to the show, and focusing on those relationships made it incredibly impactful.

I was really struck by how much the show delved into Tommy Shelby’s family history, especially in ‘The Immortal Man.’ They really brought Aunt Polly’s backstory – and Helen McCrory’s incredible performance – to the forefront, giving us a deeper understanding of where Tommy comes from.
Throughout the film, we see the character increasingly drawn to a kind of mystical, Romani-influenced worldview – more so than ever before, and particularly as it relates to his Aunt Polly. While he once understood and was raised with this way of life, he now believes it holds the true essence of life, even dismissing the importance of progress and science in comparison.
He playfully avoided revealing any details, which drew laughter from the audience at the BFI. “It just happens,” he explained, suggesting it was unavoidable to discuss certain aspects of the project.
As a huge Peaky Blinders fan, I’m so excited to see Tommy Shelby’s story continue in ‘The Immortal Man’! It sounds like the film will really explore some big questions about whether Tommy’s life is predetermined, or if he truly has control over his own choices – it’s going to be fascinating to see how they play with destiny, fate, and free will.
