Fans are still saddened by the recent passing of Emmy-winning actress Catherine O’Hara, and one of her most beloved movies will soon be removed from Netflix.
Based on Peter Brown’s 2016 book, The Wild Robot tells the story of Roz, a robot who crashes on a remote island. After a rocky start, she makes friends with the island’s animals, like an orphaned gosling named Brightbill, and begins to wonder what she’s really meant to do with her life – and if she even wants to return home.
After being available for about nine months, the popular movie The Wild Robot will soon be removed from Netflix. Currently boasting a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it will leave the streaming service on March 26th, following its debut on May 24th. As of today, it’s unclear where the film will be available to watch after it leaves Netflix.
The voice cast of The Wild Robot is impressive, featuring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o as Roz and Kit Connor, known from Heartstopper, as Brightbill. O’Hara lent her voice to Pinktail, a motherly opossum who guides Roz in raising Brightbill. Pedro Pascal also stars as Fink, a red fox who becomes Roz’s first friend after she washes ashore on the island.
Chris Sanders, the director and writer behind films like Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, recently released The Wild Robot to widespread critical acclaim. The film is now tied with Chicken Run (from 2000) as DreamWorks Animation’s second highest-rated movie ever, boasting a remarkable 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Sanders also directed the original How to Train Your Dragon, which holds the studio’s top spot with an even higher 99% rating on the site.
The film was a financial success, earning around $335 million worldwide on a $78 million budget. It even exceeded expectations, performing well despite opening alongside Megalopolis and Joker: Folie à Deux. After accounting for marketing costs and theater shares, DreamWorks and Universal Pictures made approximately $140 million in profit, leading the studio and the filmmakers to begin planning a sequel.
It’s funny, The Wild Robot actually marked the first time Pascal and O’Hara worked together, which is surprising considering most animated movies don’t have actors recording scenes together anymore. They didn’t really get a chance to share the screen until a few months before the show came out, when O’Hara joined The Last of Us as the therapist in Jackson. Pascal recently shared how incredibly grateful he was for the opportunity to work with her, and it’s clear how much he valued that experience.
Fans disappointed to see The Wild Robot leave Netflix shouldn’t worry for long. It’s expected to return to a streaming service within about a month. The film initially streamed on Peacock for four months before becoming available on Netflix as part of a deal between Universal and the streamer. After leaving Netflix, it will return to Peacock, so look for it there around the end of March or beginning of April.
