You’ll be happy to hear that The Outer Worlds 2 will let you choose between playing in first-person and third-person, whichever you prefer.
As a gamer, I really appreciate how this game lets me switch viewpoints whenever I want. It’s a classic Bethesda thing – giving you freedom to play how *you* want, and honestly, it’s just cool to have that choice.
So, what led Obsidian Entertainment to add a third-person perspective to the sequel? The original *Outer Worlds* game was strictly first-person, so there must be a reason for this shift.
Speaking to Game Informer, director Brandon Adler provides some insight:
We originally planned for a first-person perspective in the game. It wasn’t until around two years ago that we began experimenting with a third-person view.
Around the middle of the development process, we realized there was strong potential demand, so we assessed how challenging it would be to actually build it.
This sequel feels like a natural and well-considered evolution of the original. From what we’ve seen, The Outer Worlds 2 seems to be improving on the strengths of the first game, rather than trying to completely change direction.
Knowing this, Obsidian brought in a team called Disruptive to develop the game’s third-person perspective.
It’s likely more difficult than most people think. All the character’s movements need to work smoothly with the existing first-person gameplay, and you’ll have to make sure the camera controls feel good no matter where the player is.
It’s the kind of thing that would need some serious testing before it’s ready to go.
Despite the challenges, Obsidian seems to have pulled it off. Hopefully, both ways to play the game will be enjoyable when The Outer Worlds 2 comes out later this month.
