In 2025, physical game spending dropped to a new low in the US.
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, sales totaled just $1.5 billion – the lowest amount in records going back to 1995.
While physical game sales are decreasing, they still generate revenue – physical media hasn’t disappeared entirely. However, the trend is clearly downward, and there’s no indication that it will reverse in the near future.
Digital game sales are increasing every year, and companies like Sony and Microsoft naturally want players to buy games through their online stores.
Offering a wide range of games digitally encourages players to stick with one gaming system – particularly now that consoles without disc drives are available. Plus, companies benefit financially by reducing the costs of making and distributing physical game copies and their packaging.
This is happening worldwide, and a recent report about the UK’s brick-and-mortar stores showed a very worrying situation.
There’s a bit of good news in the latest analysis: the decrease isn’t as dramatic as feared. According to Piscatella, spending fell by 11% in 2025. This is the smallest drop since 2021, and a considerable improvement compared to the 28% decline seen in 2024.
So, what are your thoughts on this? Are you still purchasing physical copies of games? Let us know what you think the future of gaming looks like in the comments!
