PlayStation used to be okay with Nintendo gaining popularity in Japan, but the new CEO, Hideaki Nishino (who is Japanese), plans to aggressively compete for market share – a shift from the approach of his predecessor, Jim Ryan.
A report from TV Tokyo (translated by Install Base user Hartmann) indicates the company intends to release a more affordable, Japanese-only version of its console within four months of its competitor launching a similar strategy with the Switch 2.
This decision isn’t without its downsides – the console could actually lose money for the manufacturer, as the cost of parts has significantly increased since the PlayStation 5 first came out in 2020. However, Nishino seems to think it’s a crucial step to reverse PlayStation’s declining sales in Japan.
The PlayStation 5 initially sold well in Japan, but sales have recently dropped because of higher prices. Adding to this challenge, Nintendo is dominating the market with its popular Switch console, taking away customers from Sony.
A major sign that the new Switch 2 is more powerful could be seeing big, popular games like Resident Evil Requiem and Final Fantasy 7 Remake released on it. These kinds of games haven’t usually been available on Nintendo consoles because of hardware limitations.
Sony still faces significant challenges. It’s hard to match the popularity of its competitor’s exclusive games, and the PS5’s design, which doesn’t allow for easy portability, remains a drawback.
As a PlayStation fan, I’m really hoping this price drop and new marketing campaign will finally give the PS5 the boost it needs. It’s great to see Sony trying to get more people to experience it!
We should have a better idea of whether his bet has paid off in the coming months.
