PlayStation Executive Says “We’re Really Hitting Our Stride Now” With the PS5

Following comments from Sony’s CFO suggesting the PlayStation 5 is still in its early stages, a PlayStation executive has echoed that sentiment. Eric Lempel, a senior vice president at PlayStation, stated in a recent interview with BBC News that the PS5 has much more potential and that Sony plans to continue supporting it with new content for the foreseeable future.

When asked about the PlayStation 5’s future, Lempel hinted that the console is now reaching its full potential. He also suggested that a currently unreleased game will eventually become the best-selling title on the PS5, but wouldn’t reveal which one.

Lempel didn’t share details, but he probably meant either Marvel’s Wolverine, expected in Fall 2026, or Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6, releasing November 19, 2026. Steve Cottam, head of Antstream Arcade, thinks consoles last longer now—much longer than the 5-year cycles of the 1990s and 2000s—because game development takes significantly more time these days.

According to a recent interview with BBC News, game consoles in the 80s and 90s saw massive leaps in performance with each new generation. While consoles are still getting better today, the improvements are now more about subtle technical advancements than dramatic, noticeable changes for most players.

Christopher Dring from GamesIndustry.biz also noted that game development is taking much longer these days. He pointed out that even a major developer like Naughty Dog, known for games like The Last of Us, used to release new titles much more frequently.

Naughty Dog released four games on the PlayStation 3. They released three on the PlayStation 4, and haven’t released any yet on the PlayStation 5.

Lempel suggests console generations last as long as they do, in part, because gamers are now more willing to experiment with different types of games, including smaller, independent titles, instead of only focusing on major, big-budget releases.

Players are engaging with games much more than they did on previous consoles, averaging about 50% more playtime. They’re also exploring a wider variety of titles – not just the popular ones, but also smaller, lesser-known games they might not have discovered otherwise, according to Lempel.

During a recent earnings call, Sony’s Tao explained that the PS5 is still developing and the company isn’t prepared to talk about PlayStation’s long-term plans at this time.

As a gamer, it’s awesome to hear from Sony’s Tao that the PS5 is still evolving! They’re not stopping here – they’ve got big plans to keep growing the console and its offerings. Basically, they want to get the PS5 into as many homes as possible, especially during the holiday shopping season, because they know if people love the console, they’ll stick with PlayStation for years to come – and that’s good for everyone.
