In an unexpected twist, Sony is unveiling a fresh version of the PS5, featuring reduced specifications, which has left PlayStation enthusiasts less than thrilled. This console generation has indeed been unique, as unlike past generations where hardware prices gradually dropped, this one has seen costs climb instead. To add salt to the wound, the prices for both the standard and Pro versions of the PS5 rose in August. Now, gamers may find themselves paying more not only for their next-gen consoles but also receiving a device with fewer features.
Sony is planning to decrease the storage capacity of the PS5 Slim model in Europe from 1TB to 825GB starting with the CFI-210 version. Interestingly, the price remains at €499 despite this change. As a result, the new console will have approximately 600GB of usable storage, which is not significantly different from the PS4’s capacity. However, Sony has not been clear about the reasons for this downgrade, but it seems to be an effort to lower costs, though this is only speculation as no official information has been provided yet.
“No Way This Is Real”
Although Sony hasn’t explicitly acknowledged this decrease in quality, it has certainly been noticed. In fact, a prominent post on the PS5 subreddit discusses this very issue, with many frustrated and disappointed PlayStation enthusiasts voicing their concerns in the comment section.
As a gamer, I’d say something like: “I can’t believe this is legit! It’s both laughable and tragic at the same time.” Another commenter chimes in, “This takes gaming to a whole new level of embarrassing.
A third person remarks, “It seems like a vivid dream when I recall the past, where a five-year-old console was incredibly affordable, often including games and accessories as part of the package.

Currently, the reduced specs seem to affect only the digital variant of the PS5 Slim model, leaving the standard PS5 with a disc drive untouched, which is puzzling. However, it’s worth noting that this may not hold true indefinitely as cost-cutting measures applied to the slim version could potentially apply to the standard console as well. The standard PS5 is rumored to have stronger profit margins than the digital console due to the higher price Sony sets for the disc drive compared to its actual production cost. Yet, it’s uncertain whether the standard model will require such adjustments. Furthermore, this isn’t the only recent hardware decision that has drawn criticism from PlayStation enthusiasts; some are also displeased with the latest PS5 controller design.
What’s Going On?
The economy, both domestically (in the U.S.) and globally, is currently struggling, leading to various challenges. Consequently, companies like Sony are adjusting their prices for hardware, a move that appears reasonable given the economic situation but can seem excessive to PlayStation fans who perceive it as an attempt by Sony to save costs in areas with minimal backlash. However, one might question if PlayStation fans’ concerns are merely overreactions or if Sony is indeed being greedy. As usual, we welcome your thoughts on this matter. What do you think? Is the fanbase’s discontent justified, or is Sony just being mindful of its financial situation?
