PlayStation Is Surprisingly Shutting Down One of Its Own First-Party PS5 Games

PlayStation recently announced it’s closing down one of its own PlayStation 5 games later this year. While games are often discontinued, it’s unusual for PlayStation to shut down titles it publishes directly. The only recent major example was Concord, which was cancelled just weeks after it launched in 2024. Now, another PS5 game will be removed, though it’s one many players may not know well.

PlayStation announced this week that servers for Firewall Ultra will be turned off in September. The game, a multiplayer shooter released in 2023, was created specifically for the PlayStation VR2 headset on PS5. Its popular predecessor, Firewall: Zero Hour, was a hit on the original PlayStation VR for PS4, prompting a sequel developed by First Contact Entertainment. However, Firewall Ultra didn’t achieve the same level of success, ultimately leading to the closure of First Contact Entertainment at the end of last year.

Although Firewall Ultra has still been working since the studio First Contact closed, that won’t last much longer. The game will permanently shut down on September 17th, and it’s no longer available to buy on the PlayStation Store. Surprisingly, Sony didn’t announce this news directly; instead, they updated an old PlayStation Blog post from almost three years ago with the shutdown details.

This Move Represents One of PlayStation’s Biggest Failures of the PS5 Generation

The launch of Firewall Ultra highlights the struggles of PlayStation VR2. Unlike the original PSVR, the PSVR2 hasn’t achieved similar success, likely due to consumer hesitancy and its high cost. A key issue is PlayStation’s limited investment in exclusive games; Firewall Ultra and Horizon: Call of the Mountain were the only first-party titles released for the platform.

PlayStation probably won’t make another VR headset. They now seem more focused on handheld gaming, and rumors suggest the PS6 might even include a portable gaming option. Considering the success Nintendo and Valve have had with handheld devices recently, this makes a lot of sense for PlayStation as they plan for the future.
