For users on the PlayStation Plus tiers (Extra and Premium), there’s some exciting news – they just received two brand-new games that launch day exclusive to their platform. This might not appear remarkable to those who are subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, as day one releases are quite frequent on that service and sometimes overwhelming. However, day one releases on PlayStation Plus are relatively uncommon compared to Xbox Game Pass, where you could almost expect a weekly addition if you’re lucky, while on PlayStation Plus, you might see one or two a month at best. Consequently, having two new PlayStation Plus games launching simultaneously is quite rare.
For August 2025’s PlayStation Plus selection, two free games are included: “Sword of the Sea,” created by Giant Squid Studios, who are known for previous works like “Abzu” (2016) and “The Pathless” (2020), and “The Rogue Prince of Persia,” a new title from Evil Empire and Ubisoft. Early reviews suggest that “Sword of the Sea” is quite impressive, earning an 89 on Metacritic, making it a must-play for PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers. On the other hand, “The Rogue Prince of Persia,” receiving an 83 on Metacritic, is also worth checking out by PlayStation users.
Sword of the Sea
Overview:
In this journey, ride on breathtaking sandy waves and sparkling waters in a thrilling mission to reclaim a lost sea. Created by the creative mind behind Abzu, The Pathless, and Journey, Sword of the Sea is an exhilarating surfing experience that blends swift movement reminiscent of classic skateboarding and snowboarding games with atmospheric exploration.
The Rogue Prince of Persia
In this game, you’ll scale walls with a distinct 2D movement and transition smoothly into intense acrobatic battles as you swiftly move through an attacking army to protect your capital city. This is another exciting entry in the action-platformer roguelike genre of the ‘Prince of Persia’ series.
How Long Are These Games Free With PlayStation Plus?
Typically, Sony does not reveal the duration for which PS5 games are free on PlayStation Plus. Generally, games signed with PlayStation Plus agree to one-year or two-year contracts. Consequently, it’s likely these games will leave the libraries of PS Plus Extra and Premium in either August 2026 or August 2027, although this isn’t guaranteed as contract lengths can sometimes be extended.
Regarding next month’s free PlayStation Plus games, they haven’t been announced yet, but we do have a list of potential contenders for departure from the subscription service in September.
