Sony has unexpectedly revealed some details about when we can expect the PlayStation 6, the next console after the PlayStation 5. With the PS5 being out for nearly five years, many gamers are starting to wonder what’s next. Although Sony hasn’t officially mentioned the PS6, they’ve given fans a general timeframe for when the next console will likely be available in stores.
PlayStation released a new video today featuring Mark Cerny, the lead designer of both the PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro. In the video, Cerny discussed PlayStation’s continued work with AMD, a partnership focused on creating the technology that will power the next generation of PlayStation – likely the PS6. The video went into further detail about how this new technology will improve upon the capabilities of the current PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Towards the end of the conversation, Mark Cerny mentioned he’s excited about using this technology in a future PlayStation console within the next few years. While he didn’t give a specific date, “a few years” suggests the PS6 might launch around 2028, or later. This idea is reinforced by Cerny’s statement that much of the technology for the PS6 is still under development and currently exists only as simulations. This means Sony still has significant work to do before the PS6 is ready for release.
When Will Sony Fully Reveal the PS6?
Sony has openly discussed developing a new PlayStation console. Following the release of the PS5 Pro, key figures at Sony, including Cerny, have indicated they are already planning the next generation of PlayStation hardware. However, even with this transparency, a full reveal of the PS6 is likely still a ways off.
If Sony follows the same pattern as with the PlayStation 5, we probably won’t see the PS6 until 2028 – assuming that’s when the new console actually comes out. Sony didn’t reveal what the PS5 would look like until half a year before its 2020 release. So, even if Sony starts discussing the technology powering the PS6, the console’s design will likely stay secret for quite a while.
Even while some games are moving to other platforms, there are still many PlayStation exclusives planned for the PS5 in 2026 and beyond. *Marvel’s Wolverine* is now expected in 2026, along with *Saros*, a new game from Housemarque. Naughty Dog is also continuing development on their new project, *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*, though its release date hasn’t been announced yet.
