PlayStation Studios Made $300 Million Over 3 Years From PC Releases – Rumor

There’s been talk that Sony might stop releasing its single-player PlayStation games on PC. This has led people to speculate about how well those PC ports – like God of War Ragnarök and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – have actually performed financially. While Sony hasn’t confirmed anything, information from a former employee’s LinkedIn profile could shed some light on the situation.

Jerry Liu, a former PC planner and insights manager at PlayStation (January 2021 – June 2023), shared that during his time at Sony, the PC gaming division increased its net revenue from zero to $300 million over three years.

So, my job was all about making PlayStation games on PC as successful as possible. That meant figuring out the best way to promote them, planning out the budgets, and really making the case to the higher-ups that we should be more competitive with our pricing. I spent a lot of time looking at what games we already had and building models to predict how well new releases would sell. Honestly, pushing for those more aggressive price points really paid off – we saw a 25% jump in revenue from PC game sales!

A recent report suggested Sony planned to release its single-player games, including last year’s Ghost of Yōtei and the upcoming Saros, on PC. However, Sony has now cancelled those plans and halted all work on PC ports. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, sources within the company revealed that some at PlayStation were hesitant about bringing their exclusive games to PC in the first place.

Honestly, I heard the main reason they didn’t do it was because they were worried it would hurt PlayStation sales down the line. Not just the PS5 right now, but future consoles too, and even the PlayStation brand itself. They figured it could create problems for years to come, so they played it safe.

Recently, Jason Schreier mentioned that Sony intends to publicly announce it will stop releasing single-player games for PC “eventually.” The timing of this announcement is unclear; it could be a quick update on social media or a more formal statement during a financial report to investors.

Even with these future plans, Sony still intends to release multiplayer games on PC at the same time as their PlayStation 5 versions. The huge popularity of Helldivers 2 probably influenced this decision, and we already know that upcoming games like Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Horizon Hunters Gathering will be available on PC. This is a smart move because allowing cross-platform play means PS5 players won’t have to worry about finding enough people to play with, as PC players will contribute to the overall player base.

This could be the last single-player PlayStation game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, to be released on PC. However, it’s important to remember that Kojima Productions isn’t directly owned by PlayStation Studios. Sony only published the game, meaning they probably don’t have much control over where Kojima Productions releases its titles in the future. Recent reports show the PC version has already been a success, selling over 2 million copies since launch.
