Some fans were concerned when they heard the team making the new Resident Evil movie had a lot of creative freedom. However, recent reports suggest this was a good choice. Industry insider Daniel Richtman says a test screening of Zach Cregger’s version of the film went very well.
Someone shared on X (formerly Twitter) that a test screening of the Resident Evil movie went really well. While fans are excited, some worry that a ‘good’ movie might not stay true to the source material. Details about the characters and story are still under wraps, as those involved haven’t shared much information yet.
Cregger previously stated his Resident Evil movie would honor the most important parts of the games while also offering a fresh, new storyline. He aims to create a film that’s a tribute to the entire Resident Evil series.
Cregger explained that his work doesn’t violate the established rules of the game series. As a huge fan himself, he sees his contribution as a tribute to the games, carefully staying within the existing story framework. He’s not trying to retell the story of Leon, as that narrative is already available within the games themselves. He’s simply offering a different perspective and story within that world.
He understands some Resident Evil fans would prefer a movie that closely follows one of the games’ storylines. However, he suggests those fans might be better off simply playing the game itself. This likely means we shouldn’t expect to see beloved characters like Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine featured prominently in the film, which is disappointing for many.
Back in February, Oliver Berben, the CEO of Constantin Film – which owns the rights to the Resident Evil films – discussed the creative freedom director Johannes Roberts had with the movie’s storyline.
According to Berben, the Resident Evil franchise has been hugely successful globally, earning over a billion dollars at the box office. Now, they’re aiming to do something different – not just tell a new story, but empower a new generation to reimagine the franchise and create their own unique vision. Cregger has been given complete creative freedom to achieve this.
PlayStation Productions and Constantin Film are teaming up to create a new Resident Evil movie. The script is being written by Shay Hatten, known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Army of the Dead, and Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian. This won’t be just another sequel in the Resident Evil series; it’s a complete reboot of the franchise.
There was a test screening for Resident Evil. I hear it’s great.
