PlayStation recently gave PS5 owners a pleasant surprise with a free download. Gaming, especially on the PS5, is becoming increasingly expensive. While video games have always been a costly hobby, this generation is really stretching gamers’ budgets. Between the high price of games, rising subscription fees, and even increases to the console’s price itself, it’s getting harder to afford. Unlike past PlayStation consoles which typically became cheaper over time, the PS5 has actually increased in price three times worldwide, and twice in the US. So, free content feels particularly welcome to PS5 users compared to the PS4 generation.
This free download isn’t a full PS5 game – it’s much smaller than that. Free PS5 games are very rare on the PlayStation Store, and this isn’t one of them. Instead, PS5 users are getting a new animated theme for the Welcome Hub. This theme is based on The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, a new open-world RPG that’s only available on PlayStation consoles.
Free PS5 Theme
Similar to other themes on the PS5, this one features simple animation. It uses official game artwork and adds subtle movement – in this case, slowly moving birds and clouds in the background. You can see the original artwork below. The theme itself removes any text, crops the image slightly, and presents it in a higher resolution.

This artwork would be fantastic as a general fantasy theme. However, because the game’s characters are so noticeable, it will probably only attract people who are already fans of the game and the franchise.
It’s unclear how long the current free download will last, but so far, every animated theme released for the PS5 has stayed available. The most recent game to get this treatment was Marathon, a collaboration between Bungie and PlayStation. It’s rare for games not made by PlayStation to receive a theme on the console, and the process for getting one is unknown. It seems difficult, as there are only a small number of game-specific themes available – around a dozen or two.
To install the theme on your PS5, open the Welcome Hub and scroll to the right until you find the “Theme” section. Select it, and you’ll see the theme listed first under the “Games” area.
