Sony has had a dedicated team at PlayStation working on preserving older games and content for quite some time.
The team, led by Garrett Fredley, a Senior Build Engineer focused on IP Preservation, primarily works to preserve PlayStation’s classic games and all related content.
As a fan, I really appreciate when developers make their older game source code available. It’s awesome because it means we can more easily get our hands on things like the original code, helpful documentation, and all the game’s assets. Plus, it opens the door for possible future updates or even complete re-releases, which is just fantastic!
Fans were reminded of this work today, when Fredley shared the below post:
PlayStation is committed to preserving its games and plans to continue this work for the foreseeable future. Our team was thrilled to share our ideas and goals with Sony’s leaders, and we’re optimistic about what the future holds.
Sony appears to be impressed with the team’s work on protecting and expanding its valuable video game franchises, as company leaders recently received an update on their progress.
This isn’t surprising news, but it’s good to see that the work to protect these things is still happening.
As a long-time fan, I was so hyped to see some classic franchises popping up! The image showed off Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, WipEout, Killzone, and a bunch of other games I grew up with – it’s awesome to see them again!
We’re not guaranteeing these shows will return, but we hope that by carefully preserving and organizing these older materials, it will be simpler to bring them back in the future.
Fredley mentioned his team had already stored over half a petabyte of data, and that amount has likely grown significantly since then. Just to give you an idea, a petabyte is equal to 1,000 terabytes.
It’s awesome to know they’re still working on this stuff behind the scenes! Hopefully, it means we’ll get some cool re-releases down the line. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
