Pluto TV Is Celebrating William Shatner’s 95th Birthday in a Big Way (and Star Trek Fans Will Be Thrilled)

As a lifelong sci-fi fan, I have to say William Shatner is Star Trek. He practically defined Captain Kirk when he first played him back in 1966, and really helped launch the whole world of sci-fi as we know it. Everyone loved him in the role, and he’s come back to play Kirk so many times over the years! It’s amazing that, as he turns 95 this Sunday, March 22nd, Pluto TV is doing a full Star Trek celebration – a total takeover dedicated to him and Captain Kirk. It’s something all Trek fans, whether they’ve been watching for decades or are just discovering it, are going to enjoy.

Pluto TV is celebrating William Shatner’s birthday with a special Star Trek event! Starting Friday, March 20th and lasting through April 3rd, they’re bringing back a dedicated Star Trek channel. The celebration continues on March 22nd with birthday-themed programming and a Star Trek movie marathon across multiple channels.

Pluto TV Is Going All Trek For Shatner’s Milestone Birthday

Starting today, Friday, March 20th, fans can enjoy a special Star Trek pop-up on six channels. This includes all the Star Trek films, the original series, and shows like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, which is returning as its own channel for this event. On Sunday, the celebration continues with birthday-themed programming, featuring a full-day marathon of the original series and the first six Star Trek movies – both starring William Shatner – on dedicated channels. As a bonus, you can catch The Comedy Central Roast of William Shatner on Funny AF starting at 10 pm Eastern Time.

There’s plenty of Star Trek to watch this weekend! All of the Star Trek movies, including those featuring William Shatner – Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier, The Undiscovered Country, and Generations – are available. You can also enjoy other films like First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis, the 2009 Star Trek reboot, Into Darkness, and Beyond.

Shatner’s Captain Kirk Changed What It Meant to Be a Leading Man

William Shatner’s performance as Captain Kirk did more than just make Star Trek a hit; it changed how we saw leading men in entertainment. In the 1960s, heroes were typically portrayed as strong, silent, and classically handsome. Shatner’s Kirk was different. He was complex, quirky, and sometimes flawed, showing a more human and relatable side. This wasn’t just a deeper portrayal of the character; it broadened the definition of what a leading man could be and was a truly important shift in how characters were written and performed.

Over the years, heroes and main characters in entertainment have become more complex and realistic. This trend began with William Shatner’s nuanced portrayal in the original Star Trek series, which is a major reason why it remains such a beloved and influential show today. As Shatner approaches his 95th birthday, it’s wonderful that Pluto TV is honoring his legacy with a special celebration.
