The recent Switch releases of Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen have been a huge hit, and Nintendo is recognizing the potential to do more. Even though these games are over 20 years old, FireRed and LeafGreen are still incredibly popular with fans, and the Kanto region – along with the original 151 Pokemon – remains beloved. The strong sales numbers show Nintendo should consider bringing other classic Pokemon games to the Switch as well.
Nintendo recently shared its weekly eShop sales figures, and Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are still the top-selling games. FireRed has been the best-selling Switch game on the eShop for three weeks straight, with LeafGreen consistently close behind. Remarkably, these sales numbers are based on revenue, not how many copies are sold. This means FireRed and LeafGreen, even though they cost $20 each, are earning more money than games priced at $60 or higher.
The recent Pokemon games released on the Switch seem to be doing better than Nintendo expected. Because of this success, it makes sense for Nintendo to bring over more older Pokemon titles. The most obvious choices are Pokemon Sapphire, Pokemon Ruby, and Pokemon Emerald. These games would work well with the already available FireRed and LeafGreen, letting players trade Pokemon between all versions. It would also give fans of the Generation 3 games a simple way to play the original Hoenn region games.
Will More Classic Pokemon Games Come to Switch?

Will Nintendo bring Pokémon Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald to the Switch? It’s hard to say for sure. It seems like a smart move, as Nintendo could easily make a lot of money by releasing these classic games on the system. Considering how little effort would probably be needed to do so, it’s puzzling why they haven’t considered it.
Nintendo has often gone against what fans expect, and even industry trends. It’s possible they’re intentionally holding back on this to keep fans interested and wanting more for now.
If given enough time, Nintendo should realize how beneficial it would be to bring older Pokémon games – not just from the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance, but also the DS and later – to the Switch or its next console. These ports wouldn’t just be a quick way to make money; they could make Pokémon more popular than it’s been in decades.
