Pokemon Go Adds More Regional Variants with Next Gen 9 Debut (But It Could Be Worse)

Many Pokémon Go players are already excited about Go Fest 2026. While the events in Tokyo and Chicago have finished, and Copenhagen’s is coming up, Niantic has announced another big event before the global Go Fest on July 11th. The Flying Taxi event, happening from June 23rd to 29th, will introduce a new Pokémon, though some versions will only be available in certain regions.

Get ready, trainers! The next event in Pokemon Go is bringing Squawkabilly, the flying taxi Pokemon from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet! This little parrot comes in four different colors – green, blue, yellow, and white – and, of course, Niantic is making it a regional exclusive. Starting June 23rd, you’ll only be able to find certain colors in specific parts of the world, just like with Pokemon like Flabebe and Oricorio. So, if you want to complete your Pokedex and catch ’em all, you’ll need to pay attention to where each Squawkabilly color spawns. Here’s everything you need to know to add this new Paldean Pokemon to your collection!

How to Get All Squawkabilly Variants in Pokemon Go

The best part about the new Pokemon Go update is that Squawkabilly will appear naturally in the wild, so you can find one simply by playing. During the Flying Taxi event, running from June 23rd to June 29th, you can also earn Squawkabilly by completing Field Research tasks. This makes it easier to find than Pokemon that only appear in Eggs or Raids. Keep in mind that the specific form of Squawkabilly you encounter will depend on your location.

Squawkabilly has four different forms in Pokémon Go, matching the number available in Scarlet & Violet. Here’s a guide to each form and where to find them:

  • Global Squawkabilly Spawns (available worldwide): Yellow Plumage and White Plumage
  • Eastern Hemisphere Squawkabilly Spawns: Green Plumage
  • Western Hemisphere Squawkabilly Spawns: Blue Plumage

You can easily find Yellow and White Squawkabilly all over the world, particularly during the Flying Taxi event. However, Green Squawkabilly only appears in the Eastern Hemisphere, while players in the Western Hemisphere will find Blue Squawkabilly instead.

It’s actually pretty good that two out of the four new Squawkabilly variants are available worldwide. Players will likely only need to trade with someone in a different region to get the one that doesn’t appear locally, which is much easier than trying to find some other rare Pokémon. If you haven’t already, now’s a great time to connect with a Pokémon Go friend on the other side of the world – you can become ‘Forever Friends’ and trade these variants remotely.

Can Squawkabilly Be Shiny in Pokemon Go?

Unlike some new Pokémon recently released in Pokémon Go, Squawkabilly won’t be available as a Shiny Pokémon at first. There are four different color variations depending on where you are playing, but none of them will be Shiny when the Pokémon is first introduced.

Squawkabilly can’t evolve, and there’s no shiny version to find either. This means the newest Pokémon in Pokémon Go doesn’t have those typical collection goals. Instead, the Flying Taxi event will focus on finding different regional forms of Squawkabilly as you encounter them in the wild and complete Field Research.
