Niantic, the company behind Pokemon Go, recently announced big improvements to the game’s player-versus-player (PvP) battle system. They’re aiming to fix problems like lag and delayed responses, which have made battles feel unreliable. Now, players can test these changes firsthand in a new trial area of the Go Battle League called the Preview Cup. It’s only been available for about a day, but Pokemon Go fans are already sharing their feedback.
I was so excited when Pokemon Go launched the Preview Cup (Experimental) league on April 21st! It’s a new way to test out battling other players, and you can find it in the Go Battle League, just like the other special Cups they run. Niantic even asked us what we think of it, and honestly, they’re getting a LOT of feedback – good and bad, I’m sure!
Pokemon Go Players Aren’t Impressed with First Preview of Go Battle League Changes
Pokémon Go’s player-versus-player (PvP) battles are due for an update. Many players have been frustrated by lag and a predictable, unchanging battle strategy. Niantic, the game’s developer, hopes these upcoming changes will improve connection issues and make things like gaining energy and switching Pokémon more consistent. The current ‘Preview Cup’ is a test run of these changes, so they aren’t final yet.
Early reactions to the new system aren’t very positive. Like other recent updates to the app, the Preview Cup is experiencing performance issues like lag and freezing. Many players feel the new battle mode isn’t a significant improvement and is actually a bit more buggy than before.
I see no difference other than it being even more laggy and hits not lining up

Players of Pokemon Go are noticing similarities between the recent updates and changes made to Team GO Rocket battles earlier this year – and they’re not happy about it. Many disliked the previous changes, and now they point out that the newest updates still don’t fix issues with battles feeling repetitive or unfair, as the game doesn’t seem to match players with opponents based on skill level.
One issue with the test run is that these battles use up your daily limit for GO Battle League matches, even though it’s just experimental content. This is frustrating for players who regularly compete in Pokémon Go.

The Preview Cup is still being tested, so performance issues like lag and visual glitches might be improved. However, initial reactions suggest it doesn’t feel much different from regular GBL. When I tested it, it played very similarly to standard league battles, though with some noticeable lag.
Want to test upcoming changes to Pokémon Go‘s player-versus-player battles? You can join the Preview Cup through the Go Battle League menu in the game. Just remember, these are ranked battles and count towards your daily battle limit. We don’t know how long the Preview Cup will be available yet, but Niantic hopes to use player feedback to improve it before it’s officially released.
I’m really curious if anyone’s checked out the new experimental Preview Cup in Pokemon Go? I’d love to hear what you think! Come share your thoughts and let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
