Prime Video’s New Adult Animation Series Becomes Top 10 Streaming Hit in the U.S.

Amazon Prime Video has recently seen a lot of success with popular shows like the final season of The Boys and the fourth season of Invincible, both of which have been at the top of the charts. While Invincible will be back for another season, The Boys is wrapping up. Fortunately, Amazon Prime Video has several new shows vying for attention once The Boys concludes. Surprisingly, a new adult animated series has become one of the platform’s top ten most-watched shows.

The animated series Kevin, available on Amazon, was co-created by actress Aubrey Plaza. It centers around a cat named Kevin who navigates his owners’ breakup by embracing independence and seeking a fresh start. Similar to the show Bojack Horseman, the series features talking animals who live alongside humans. Aubrey Plaza not only produces the show but also lends her voice to it, alongside a talented cast including Jason Schwartzman, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, Aparna Nancherla, and Amy Sedaris. Although its debut didn’t top shows like The Boys and Invincible, landing in the number eight spot for original series is a significant accomplishment.

We Need To Talk About Kevin

It’s hard to say if the show Kevin is worth watching, judging by critic reviews. It currently has a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is just enough to be considered “fresh,” and critics are clearly divided on whether they enjoyed it. The first season has eight episodes, and as of now, the streaming service hasn’t announced a second season. However, the show’s popularity – it’s reached the top ten – shows that there’s still a strong interest in adult animation, both for bringing back old favorites and creating new ones.

The new animated series centers around a cat who can talk to people, but the character is actually based on Aubrey Plaza’s former pet. Plaza recently shared on The View how strange it felt to pitch the show to streaming services like Amazon and Netflix, knowing it featured a version of her cat, Kevin. She described it as a surprisingly emotional experience, almost like therapy, reflecting on meeting Joe (her cat) when she was 19. It’s been a surreal moment for her, seeing her real cat become the star of his own show.
