As a longtime Pokemon fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and disappointment when I see designs like Mega Jynx that never made it into the games we all know and love. The design is intriguing, with its fluffy hair and Ice-type gown, but let’s be real – it looks more like Elsa’s estranged cousin who got lost on her way to Arendelle.
Behind-the-scenes work is extensive in the Pokémon franchise, with early design concepts often remaining hidden from fans. Some of these designs don’t make it to the final product and get discarded, similar to what happens in a movie studio’s editing room. Recent connections between Game Freak have given us a sneak peek at early versions of Mega Gengar and now, Mega Jynx as well. While Mega Gengar underwent slight adjustments before the launch of Pokémon X and Y, Mega Jynx didn’t make it into the game, and it appears that it wasn’t chosen due to reasons we can now speculate on.
An image of Mega Jynx, which appears to have been obtained illegally, was posted on Bluesky by user Bruno Gato. You can see it directly below this text.

In the conceptual illustrations, you’ll notice that designers have taken inspiration from Jynx’s previous design. The new version, known as Mega Jynx, sports considerably larger and seemingly more fluffy hair. Its body structure has also undergone a significant change, replacing the traditional red dress with a gown that reflects its Ice-type. Many people have pointed out similarities between this character and Elsa from Frozen, but it’s important to remember that Pokemon X and Y were launched nearly a month before the Disney movie. Therefore, any similarities between the two characters are most likely unintentional.
In essence, it’s important to note that this early concept art of Jynx is not necessarily a reflection of its final design. As you might guess, designs often undergo changes before being released. Frankly, this early design doesn’t look very appealing, and it may have been one factor leading to its abandonment by The Pokemon Company. Another reason could be the developers’ desire to steer clear of any potential debates related to Jynx, a character that stirred up controversy in the past due to its design. Specifically, Jynx is an Ice/Psychic type and was accused of incorporating racist stereotypes because of its black skin tone. As a result, its color was changed from black to purple in later versions. Mega Jynx retains this change but the developers might have wished to avoid revisiting this sensitive topic altogether.

As a passionate Pokémon fan, I’ve been thrilled by the recent leak of unreleased material from The Pokémon Company. Over the past few weeks, our social media feeds have been overflowing with never-before-seen content, such as cancelled games, concept Pokémon like Mega Jynx, and more. Despite the company’s initial acknowledgement, they’ve remained tight-lipped about these leaks, leaving us fans to ponder their context.
