The Pokémon Trading Card Game remains incredibly popular, and many fans are still finding it hard to find cards in stores. However, some of the recent sets featuring Mega Evolution have been easier to purchase, including the latest U.S. release, Perfect Order. The next big set, Chaos Rising, inspired by Legends: Z-A, won’t arrive for about a month. In the meantime, The Pokémon Company has given fans a sneak peek at what’s coming next for the Mega Evolution series.
Pokemon cards usually come out in Japan before they’re released in English, typically a few months later. This gives us a sneak peek at the card designs when new Japanese sets are announced. Just recently, the first trailer for the new Pokemon set, Abyss Eye, featuring Mega Darkrai, was revealed. The English version of this set will be called Pitch Black and will be available on July 17th. It’s a smaller set, but based on the initial look at Mega Darkrai, it’s expected to include some beautiful and rare Special Illustration cards.
Pokemon TCG Shows Off Mega Darkrai ex in Abyss Eye Trailer
The recent run of sets featuring Mega Evolution has added many new Mega ex cards to the Pokemon Trading Card Game. However, up until now, these cards have all been based on Mega Pokemon that were already known from the base game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The new Abyss Eye set will change that, introducing Mega Pokemon added through the Mega Dimension downloadable content for Legends: Z-A. They’re starting with the Mythical Pokemon, Mega Darkrai. While the set’s special and hyper rare cards haven’t been revealed yet, the trailer gives us our first look at Mega Darkrai as a Pokemon TCG card.
The Abyss Eye set will be available in Japan starting May 22nd. For English speakers, it will arrive in the US on July 17th as part of the Mega Evolution – Pitch Black set. While details about the Pitch Black set are still limited, it’s expected to be very similar to the Abyss Eye set and will likely include the Mega Darkrai ex artwork shown in the recent trailer.
The upcoming Abyss Eye set will have 81 cards, with around 110-120 total cards available to collectors once secret rares are included. The English version of Pitch Black is expected to be a similar size, continuing the trend of smaller sets like Perfect Order. It’s currently unknown if Pitch Black will have as few highly sought-after cards as larger sets, but it might only include one Hyper Rare, just like Perfect Order.

If you enjoyed Mega Evolutions, particularly those recently added in Legends: Z-A, you’ll probably want this new set of Pokemon cards. Besides Mega Darkrai, the Pitch Black collection will likely feature artwork of other new Mega Evolutions from the Legends: Z-A expansion. It looks like Mega Malamar will definitely be included with Mega Darkrai. As the Japanese release date of May 22nd gets closer, we should get a preview of the other cards in this set.
