Pokémon Winds And Waves Most Controversial Reveal Is Actually Great News

Pokémon Winds and Waves has given many fans a renewed sense of optimism that Game Freak might be on the right track with the series. While it’s still too early to say if it will be truly great, the initial trailer suggests a promising direction. For the first time in over ten years, I’m genuinely hopeful about the future of the franchise, and that’s a welcome feeling. However, the game has also sparked some debate and disagreement among players.

While the new Gen 10 Pokémon games have generally been well-received, particularly regarding their updated graphics and overall style, some fans are disappointed by the announced 2027 release date. This lengthy wait, combined with other recent news in the Pokémon world, has been frustrating for many. However, instead of criticizing the delay, I think we should see the extra year of development as a positive thing, allowing the Pokémon Company to deliver a truly polished game.

Pokémon Winds & Waves Needs All The Time It Can Get

Honestly, I’m a little surprised to see people getting so worked up about the release date for Pokémon Winds and Waves. I get that it’s been four years since the last big Pokémon game, but to me, that wait feels totally justified. So much is riding on this one! Let’s be real, Pokémon hasn’t been hitting it out of the park lately – pretty much every Switch game has left fans disappointed. If Winds and Waves can turn things around and be a hit, great! But if it fails, Pokémon could end up like Call of Duty – and nobody wants to see that happen to a franchise we all love.

The extra year of development time gives Game Freak the breathing room they need to create the game we’re all hoping for. This is the first Pokémon game built specifically for the Nintendo Switch, and they’re learning new technologies along the way. There’s a lot of potential for things to go wrong with a new generation, so the delay offers reassurance they can avoid those issues. Honestly, the new release date is one of the main reasons I’m optimistic about Winds and Waves.

I understand much of the conversation about this release date focuses on the fact that there aren’t many new Pokémon games planned before then. Fans have become accustomed to a major Pokémon game – either a main series title or a Legends game – coming out each year, and we won’t be seeing one in 2026. However, I don’t think we should rule out the possibility of other Pokémon games being released before the Gen 10 games. 2026 is the 30th anniversary of the franchise, and The Pokémon Company probably has something special planned.

There Will Likely Be Plenty More Pokémon Before 2027

With the recent success of the FireRed and LeafGreen remakes on the Switch, 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for older Pokémon games. Fans are predicting that Ruby and Sapphire will be ported to the Switch next, and there’s even hope for DS classics like Black and White and Diamond and Pearl. While The Pokémon Company will probably release these games one at a time, it’s likely we’ll see at least Ruby and Sapphire available before the release of Winds and Waves.

Plus, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness came to Nintendo Switch Online in March 2026, and Pokémon Colosseum will be added later. There’s also excitement about potential future support, updates, and downloadable content for Pokémon Pokopia, which many players are already praising as the best Pokémon game yet – it also launched in 2026. In short, three Pokémon games have become available on Switch and Switch 2 in 2026, with more on the way. Because of all this, we don’t need to be concerned about the delay of Winds and Waves.

I really hope The Pokémon Company delays Winds and Waves to 2028 if it’s not finished by 2027. It’s better to get a truly excellent Pokémon game on the Nintendo Switch 2 later in its lifespan than a rushed one early on. A disappointing Pokémon game in 2027 would just make the wait feel even more frustrating and pointless. Delayed games are always better than rushed ones, and The Pokémon Company has the flexibility to wait as long as needed. I sincerely hope they do, ensuring Winds and Waves is fully polished and represents the high quality this new generation of Pokémon deserves.
