Pokémon Winds and Waves: Release date speculation, pre-orders, platforms, trailers & more

Okay, Pokémon Day 2026 finally showed us what ‘Pokémon Winds’ and ‘Pokémon Waves’ are really about! The Pokémon Company confirmed they’re coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. No exact date yet, but the cool thing is they’re planning a worldwide launch, so we’ll all be able to start playing around the same time. I’m so hyped!

Despite the reveal, Nintendo is still holding back some details. We’ve seen the game’s general world, main characters, the initial three partner Pokémon, and two unique versions of Pikachu, but we don’t yet know the full story or when it will be released and how much it will cost.

We have plenty of information to start forming a picture of Pokémon Winds and Waves. Here’s a rundown of everything known so far, including the expected release date, potential pre-order details, which platforms it will be on, gameplay specifics, and what was shown in the trailer.

When is the Pokémon Winds and Waves release date? Our speculation

Currently, Pokémon Winds and Waves is expected to release sometime in 2027. This timeframe was revealed in the announcement trailer shown on Pokémon Day in 2026, but a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.

We expect both games to launch in late 2027, most likely in October or November. This timing aligns with the release windows of previous games in the series, such as Scarlet & Violet and Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

We’ll keep this guide updated with the latest information as soon as we get more details, like in-depth gameplay videos or official store listings. Until then, what we have here is our best understanding.

Can I pre-order Pokémon Winds and Waves?

While you can add Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves to your Nintendo wishlist, pre-orders aren’t open yet at any stores. Typically, pre-orders become available only when a game is less than a year from its release date.

If the predicted release date for Pokemon Winds & Waves in late 2027 holds true, pre-orders will probably become available in late 2026 or early 2027. You’ll likely be able to buy the game ahead of time from common retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target in the US, and Amazon, Currys, GAME, Argos, Smyths, and ShopTo in the UK.

Once available, we’ll list all the direct links here, making it easy to find the best prices and pre-order offers in one place.

Which consoles and platforms can play Pokémon Winds and Waves?

Okay, huge news for Pokémon fans! I just heard that Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are officially coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 – and it looks like they’re only coming to the Switch 2. Forget trying to play them on my older 2017 Switch, it seems like these new games are built specifically for the new hardware. So, if I want to experience these, I’m gonna need to upgrade!

Recent Pokémon games on the Nintendo Switch have faced criticism for their graphics and technology. Now, it appears developer Game Freak has created a brand new main series game specifically for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, allowing them to focus entirely on the new system’s capabilities without limitations from the original Switch.

However, things are subject to change before the game comes out, and we’ll be sure to share any new information as it becomes available.

Pokémon Winds and Waves gameplay and story details

Nintendo hasn’t shown off detailed gameplay yet, but the official description gives us a good idea of what to expect: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are both open-world games taking place in a region of islands and the ocean around them. The Pokémon in each game live in unique environments shaped by the land and sea.

The publisher suggests the game will feature challenging environments and obstacles, implying that the setting will be a significant part of the overall experience.

Just like in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, your character’s clothes will be different depending on which game version you choose. This helps each version have its own unique look from the start.

At the beginning of your journey, you can choose from three partner Pokémon: Browt (a Grass-type), Pombon (a Fire-type), and Gecqua (a Water-type). Nintendo has also hinted at two unique Pikachu – Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu – but their role in the game’s story is currently unknown.

Overall, things are looking promising and generating some buzz, but the specifics of the story are still being kept secret.

The official announcement trailer for Pokémon Winds and Waves was released during the February 27, 2026 Pokémon Presents presentation.

Right now, this is more about establishing the overall setting and atmosphere than providing a detailed explanation of how everything works. However, it does give us a good first impression of the world, style, and visual appearance of both versions.

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’ve been checking out the trailer and the official website for Pokémon Winds and Waves, and it looks amazing! We’re getting a really good look at the new region – it’s all about islands and the sea! I’m excited about being able to choose from two different character looks, and I’ve already fallen in love with the first three partner Pokémon they’ve revealed. Plus, that special Pikachu pair is just too cute!

We haven’t seen detailed gameplay footage yet – things like how battles work, how you improve your character, and any new features. We’ll probably get that later, but the recent announcement trailer is currently the best look at the game.
