Police Address Human Remains Found Near Nancy Guthrie’s Home

Police are addressing what could have been an update in the Nancy Guthrie case.

About three months after Savannah Guthrie’s mother was taken from her home in Arizona, police in Tucson confirmed they found a human bone on May 7th, roughly seven miles from where the 84-year-old woman lived.

A department spokesperson told People magazine that the discovery wasn’t a crime, but rather an archaeological study of prehistoric artifacts.

A representative confirmed that experts from the University of Arizona’s Anthropology Department and the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office helped investigate the discovered remains.

Four months after Nancy went missing, Savannah is managing to keep up with the investigation while also getting back to work at Today.

The news anchor, whose brother Camron Guthrie and sister Annie Guthrie have publicly shared their concerns since their mother was kidnapped, revealed her family has been suffering greatly since the abduction from her home on February 1st. She is scheduled to return to work on April 6th.

“It’s just awful,” Savannah shared with Hoda Kotb in an interview on March 25th. “And it’s heartbreaking to imagine what she endured.”

Although she’s continuing with her life and won’t stay hidden while her mother is being searched for, the 54-year-old, who has two children with her husband Michael Feldman, acknowledged it’s a difficult time.

Savannah explained that she’s woken up every night, unable to sleep. In the darkness, she finds herself imagining her daughter’s fear, and while the thoughts are horrifying, she can’t stop them from coming.

Nevertheless, Savannah assured, “I still have hope.”

“I’m still me,” she continued. “And I don’t know what version of me that will be, but it will be.”

Regarding the conclusion of her mother’s case, she stated that she remains hopeful.

As Savannah put it, “She needs to come home now.”

Oh my gosh, I’m so worried! Nancy Guthrie, Savannah Guthrie’s mom – she’s also Annie and Camron’s mom – hasn’t been seen since the evening of January 31st. Her family last saw her at her home in Tucson, Arizona, around 9:30 p.m., according to the police. I’m just hoping she’s okay and comes home soon!

Police confirmed to Today that Nancy, age 84, was reported missing by her family on February 1st. A friend noticed she hadn’t attended church that morning and alerted her family, who searched her property for about an hour before contacting the authorities around noon.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later explained the first steps of the investigation, which involved detectives specializing in homicides, at the victim’s home.

We don’t usually involve the sheriff in situations like this, but the details emerging from the house are deeply troubling,” he explained to reporters on February 2nd. “This case was particularly striking because of what officers described finding at the scene and what we discovered just by observing it.”

This isn’t how we usually handle things,” Nanos explained. “Normally, our homicide team only investigates when there’s a death, a body to examine. In this case, we sent them out solely based on the information the surveyors provided.”

After looking into what happened, officials said they think a crime occurred at Nancy’s house.

During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos stated that investigators have confirmed they are dealing with a crime scene. He asked for the public’s assistance, noting that the community has consistently helped solve difficult cases in the past and he hopes they will do so again.

The sheriff pointed out that Nancy had difficulty walking – she couldn’t walk even a short distance on her own – which led him to suspect something wasn’t right about her disappearance.

He stated definitively, “She didn’t simply leave on her own, we’re certain of that.” He also mentioned that evidence at the location suggests she didn’t leave voluntarily.

The search for Nancy is still ongoing, and officials are concerned because she needs daily medication to stay healthy, and she likely doesn’t have it with her.

Let me tell you, I was really struck by a story I heard recently. A woman, 84 years young, is facing some serious health challenges. She needs medication, and it’s critical she gets it within 24 hours – without it, her condition could be life-threatening. It just highlights how vulnerable some of our loved ones are and the importance of ensuring they have access to the care they need.

We’re asking anyone with information about this – if you’ve seen or heard anything – to please get in touch. Call 911. We want to avoid another tragedy and need the public’s help.

Although Nancy has faced some health challenges, Dr. Nanos highlighted that her mental sharpness remains excellent.

According to Nanos, Nancy Guthrie is mentally sound and this isn’t related to dementia. She’s very alert and her family wants everyone to understand she didn’t simply wander away – any physical limitations are simply due to her age.

With the search for Nancy still ongoing, Nanos expressed his wish for her to come home safely.

“I hope we find her safe and sound,” he emphasized, “but we cannot ignore what’s in front of us.”

The day after Nancy was reported missing, the anchor of the Today show publicly shared how difficult this time is for her family.

As a family, we’re incredibly grateful for all the kind thoughts, prayers, and messages we’ve received. Right now, our hearts are completely focused on bringing Nancy home safely. It means the world to us to have so much support during this difficult time.

She expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts in the investigation and asked anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Once Savannah learned her mother, Nancy, had been reported missing, her colleagues on the Today show immediately expressed their support publicly.

Oh my gosh, you guys, Jenna Bush Hager said it on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle! She was all, ‘We love Nancy!’ And get this – she knows Nancy personally! I nearly screamed. It’s just… everything makes sense now. I’ve always known Nancy was amazing, and to hear Jenna say it, and to know they’re friends?! It’s a dream come true, honestly.

She continued, saying they were deeply thinking of Savannah and her family, and sending their prayers to everyone affected.

Meanwhile, Sheinelle Jones emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time.

She felt the show truly showcased the community at its finest when it asked viewers to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s department with any information related to the case, even if it seemed insignificant.

She added, “So we’re sending our prayers but we’re also sending our collective action.”

Before concluding the segment, both hosts continued, “We love you, Savannah.”

And Sunday Today anchor Willie Geist also urged fans to keep an eye out for Nancy.

On February 2nd, he posted on Instagram asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona. He also included the sheriff’s department’s phone number, stating that she was missing.

Savannah’s former colleague, Hoda Kotb, responded to the surprising news by posting a heartwarming photo of Savannah and Nancy together on the Today show set. In a simple message on Instagram from February 2nd, Hoda included only a red heart and praying hands emoji.

Police have labeled Nancy’s home in Arizona a crime scene, but they don’t think the public needs to be worried.

At a press conference on February 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated he didn’t believe there was an immediate danger, but emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and much work remained.

Savannah hasn’t been on Today since February 1st, when her mother was reported missing. However, local authorities have been checking in with her to ensure her well-being.

The sheriff confirmed they had spoken with her. She has a security team that has been communicating with them all night, but they aren’t ruling anything out yet.

On Feb. 2, Pima County police shared a series of updates on the timeline of Nancy’s disappearance.

Investigators now think the woman was likely taken from her home against her will, perhaps while she was sleeping, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson who spoke with MS Now on February 2nd. Detectives are investigating the possibility that she was kidnapped.

After news broke that Nancy might have been taken from her home in Arizona while she was sleeping, Savannah made a heartfelt plea.

In a recent Instagram post on February 2nd, she shared her beliefs, emphasizing the power of prayer, unity, love, and hope. She expressed faith in goodness, humanity, and, most importantly, in God.

Savannah continued, thanking everyone for keeping her mother, Nancy, in their thoughts and prayers. She described Nancy as a woman of strong beliefs and a devoted person, and asked for continued prayers, believing they would provide comfort and strength right now.

She added, “we need you.”

To conclude her plea, Savannah shared a Bible verse from Isaiah.

She shared a verse from Isaiah, writing, “He will keep those with steadfast hearts, who trust in the Lord, in perfect peace.” She added that it’s a timeless message for everyone.

Savannah continued, “Bring her home.”

Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that DNA evidence was discovered at Nancy’s house, which is now being treated as a crime scene.

We collected samples and are hoping they contain enough DNA to help us identify what we’re looking for, he told NBC News in a report on Today on February 3rd.

At a press conference held two days after Nancy went missing, Nanos explained what happened leading up to her disappearance.

According to Nanos, the doorbell camera stopped working at 1:47 a.m., just about four hours after she got back from a family visit, as she explained in a press conference on February 5th.

The software identified someone at the door, but the video was automatically deleted because Nancy didn’t have a paid subscription. However, the representative assured her they were still working to recover the footage.

The sheriff explained that Nancy’s pacemaker app lost connection with her phone at 2:28 a.m. Later, at 11:56 a.m., her family found her missing, and they called 911 at 12:03 p.m. to report it to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

About ten minutes after receiving the call, he explained that patrol teams would arrive, assess the situation, and begin a response involving both search and rescue and detectives from different units.

On February 4th, Savannah, Camron, and Annie read letters they had written, hoping to reach their mother and anyone who might be holding her, asking for her safe return.

In a video posted to Instagram, the family stated they are doing everything possible and are willing to communicate. They emphasized the prevalence of manipulated media and urgently requested undeniable proof that their loved one is alive and in the possession of those they are addressing.

My mom is the center of our world and where we feel most safe,” she said. “Her health is very delicate, and she’s in pain all the time. Right now, she doesn’t have the medication she needs to stay alive and feel better.

The next day, Camron confirmed in a separate video that the family was still “waiting for contact.”

We’re asking whoever has our mother to please contact us. We haven’t received any direct communication, and we urgently need to establish a way to communicate and begin resolving this situation.

During a press conference on February 5th, FBI agent Heith Janke announced the arrest of Derrick Callella from California. Callella is accused of sending fake texts as part of a scheme to profit from the situation, which authorities described as a complete fraud. They are also investigating a detailed ransom letter shared with TMZ, taking the threat very seriously. Callella has not yet entered a plea and was released on a $20,000 bond.

However, he noted, the Guthrie family was “still waiting for communication.”

On February 7th, the day officials told Today they had searched Annie’s Arizona home as a routine part of the investigation, Savannah posted another Instagram video suggesting her earlier wish had come true.

Speaking while holding hands with Camron and Annie, she said they received the message and understand its meaning. She pleaded for their mother’s return, explaining it was the only way they could find peace and celebrate with her.

And if her intentions weren’t clear, Savannah added, “This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

On February 10th, investigators shared surveillance photos of a person they believe may be connected to the case.

Footage from a camera on Nancy’s property shows a person wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack walking up to the house. The individual then appears to punch the camera, breaking it. Police had previously noted the camera was damaged when they arrived at the scene.

Okay, so I’ve been following the Nancy Guthrie case obsessively, and I just got an update! Apparently, the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working around the clock for the last eight days, teaming up with tech experts, to get back any footage from her house. They said some stuff got lost or messed up, maybe even because someone took out the cameras. But get this – they found the video! It wasn’t on a tape or anything, it was hidden in the system’s backup data. Seriously, they pulled it from the depths of the tech! I’m so glad they didn’t give up, this is huge!

“Working with our partners,” the note continued, “law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”

Two days after the FBI shared video of the person who went near Nancy’s house, investigators provided a description of the suspect.

According to the FBI’s Phoenix office, the suspect is a man between 5’9” and 5’10” tall with an average build. He was seen in a video wearing a black ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack with a capacity of 25 liters.

The FBI is now offering up to $100,000 – an increase from $50,000 – for information that helps find Nancy Guthrie or leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.

After Nancy had been missing for over two weeks, Pima County Sheriff Nanos released a statement to explain who might be connected to the case.

In a statement on February 16th, authorities confirmed that the entire Guthrie family – including all siblings and their spouses – have been ruled out as suspects. They emphasized the family has been fully cooperative and are themselves considered victims in this situation.

Investigators determined the gloves discovered close to Nancy’s house didn’t match the other evidence in the case.

On March 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Nanos explained to KVOA, the local NBC station, that almost three weeks prior, they initially thought a pair of gloves found about two miles from the victim’s home belonged to a restaurant. The gloves contained DNA evidence.

Although some people noticed the gloves in the doorbell footage looked similar to those worn by the suspect, Nanos dismissed this as just a guess. Investigators had already identified the glove’s owner—an employee at a local restaurant—and confirmed they weren’t connected to the crime.
