Today is the fifth anniversary of Cyberpunk 2077, the open-world role-playing game from CD Projekt Red inspired by the popular tabletop game of the same name. It’s set in a dark, futuristic world.
This game has improved dramatically since it first came out on the PlayStation 4 – and that’s a huge understatement. When it originally launched, it was riddled with technical problems and gameplay issues. It was so flawed that Sony actually offered refunds and eventually removed it from the PlayStation Store.
After years of anticipation, the game turned out to be a huge letdown. In fact, we called it “the biggest disappointment of the PS4 generation” in our review of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4, and honestly, we didn’t expect CDPR would spend the next five years trying to fix all the problems.
Watch on YouTubeFive years after its initial release, we now consider Cyberpunk 2077 to be a truly unforgettable game on PS5. It took a re-release for newer consoles, several major updates, and the fantastic Phantom Liberty expansion, but the game has finally reached its full potential.
We looked at the game again in 2022 when the PS5 version was released. We gave it a significantly better score of 8 out of 10 in our Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 review, and then rated its Phantom Liberty expansion even higher with a 9 out of 10 in our 2023 review.
It’s amazing how far things have come! 2077 will likely be remembered as one of the biggest comeback stories in video game history. Now, we can only hope the developers apply what they’ve learned to future projects like The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
Now that CD Projekt Red is working on new projects, we’re curious: what do you think of Cyberpunk 2077? Share your rating in our poll, and then discuss the game in the comments!
