Saros has been available on PS5 for more than a week, so many players have likely experienced the majority of what the game has to offer from Housemarque.
Saros isn’t a direct sequel to Returnal, but it continues the game’s story and builds on what many consider to be one of the most impactful games on the PlayStation 5.
Saros continues the foundation laid by Returnal, improving the core gameplay, making the progression system easier to understand, and expanding on the story, which was previously hinted at but is now more clearly presented.
This version is easier to pick up and play, though we’re a little hesitant to call it ‘accessible’ since Saros remains a challenging, fast-paced, and often intense shooter.
Returnal often made you work for its story, slowly piecing things together. Saros, on the other hand, is more willing to reveal its secrets as you progress and have successful gameplay sessions.
Most reviewers liked the game, but some players have expressed disappointment with how predictable it felt. We’ve also seen a lot of criticism about the story, despite some false information circulating.
We won’t give away any details, but these types of questions often come up when people talk about sequels. We noticed a similar pattern with Ghost of Yotei, another sequel from the same developer that also aimed to improve upon a popular original game.
So the big question is: does Saros surpass Returnal? Does it live up to expectations as a follow-up, or does it fall short?
Returnal is especially noteworthy because it represented a big shift for Housemarque. The studio had previously been famous for its quick, arcade-like shooting games before Sony acquired it.
This is the team’s second try at creating this fast-paced, action-packed game, and we’re curious if you feel it’s a significant improvement over what came before.
I’m a huge Returnal fan, and I’m dying to know if the Saros DLC lives up to the hype! They’ve got a poll up, and I already voted, but I’m even more curious to hear what you all think. Head down to the comments and let’s chat about it!
