A popular video game series that first appeared on the Xbox 360 in 2006 appears to be over. Back when the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were new, many games would debut on Xbox before being released on other consoles. For example, games like Mass Effect, BioShock, Dead Rising, and Ninja Gaiden 2 all started on the Xbox 360 and eventually came to other platforms or had sequels released on multiple consoles. While most of those franchises are still going strong, it seems one well-known series may have reached its conclusion.
The Saints Row series began with the first game, developed by Volition and released in 2006 as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Later installments – Saints Row 2, Saints Row: The Third, and Saints Row 4 – were released on multiple platforms, increasing the series’ popularity. In 2022, Volition tried to restart the franchise with a new Saints Row game, but it wasn’t successful with either players or critics. Unfortunately, this led to the studio, Volition, closing down in 2023.
It appears Embracer Group, the company that owns the Saints Row franchise, isn’t planning another game in the series. Chris Stockman, who was the design director on the original Saints Row, had developed a pitch for a new installment, but says Embracer never responded. He now believes this means the series is finished.
As a big fan, it’s really disheartening to hear that the franchise might be over. Apparently, the person who worked on it tried to find a way to revive things, but Embracer Group, the company that owns it now, hasn’t even responded to their ideas. It sounds like they just aren’t interested in doing anything with it, which is a real shame. I really wish things could be different, but it doesn’t look promising.
This Franchise Dying Is a Big Mistake

It’s a real shame to hear Saints Row might be finished, as it represents a big lost chance for Embracer Group. Despite the issues with the 2022 game, the series has a lot of potential. Open-world and crime-based games are still hugely popular – just look at the excitement for Grand Theft Auto 6. With some innovative thinking and a clear understanding of what players enjoy about Saints Row, a reboot could be a major success for Embracer.
It’s likely Saints Row won’t get another chance to succeed. Although the people at Embracer Group could decide to revive the series in the future, that doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon.
