Okay, so I was really excited about this new post-apocalyptic shooter, Misery, that just came out on Steam. But the Steam page is suddenly gone! The developers, Platypus Entertainment, are saying it was taken down because of a DMCA claim filed by the creators of the Stalker games, GSC Game World. Apparently, GSC thinks Platypus used some of their game content without permission, and Platypus is fighting to get the page back up. They even shared an email suggesting that’s what this is all about, which is a bit of a mess, honestly.
Currently, the Steam page for the game Misery is unavailable. All information about this situation comes from a post by the game’s developer, Platypus. They state that GSC GameWorld, the creators of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., issued a DMCA takedown request, causing the game to be removed from sale. GSC GameWorld claims Misery infringes on their intellectual property, pointing to player reviews that mention S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Platypus denies these claims and says they are working to get Misery back on Steam.
I’ve reached out to GSC Game World for comment.
The email claims that when the copyright takedown request was submitted, Valve automatically removed the game from its store to protect itself from potential legal issues under US copyright law. The game’s developer, Platypus, can dispute the takedown claim. If they do, the person who claimed copyright infringement would have 10 business days to sue. If no lawsuit is filed within that time, the game would be put back on Steam.
Platypus’s main developer, Maewing, announced on Discord that they’ve appealed a recent decision and are awaiting a review, which should take about 10 business days. Development continues on the game, with two major updates planned for release later this month and before the New Year. Currently, the team is focused on adding cats and dogs. Maewing thanked the community for their support and encouraged them to voice concerns about the situation without resorting to insults towards GSC, simply stating that their actions were unfair.
The creators of Misery stated in their initial Steam post that the game is entirely original, with no content taken from the games made by GSC Game World. They emphasized that all characters, story elements, graphics, sounds, and code are either newly created or used with proper licensing. Platypus, a representative for the team, added that they don’t compete with GSC or infringe on their intellectual property, and described the attempted takedown as a misuse of power by a large company against a small independent developer.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Maewing initially responded to the strike filing with a post containing at least one slur, as reported by PC Gamer. While they’ve since edited the post and apologized for “old posts and comments that included inappropriate and offensive statements,” it undermines the sincerity of their recent appeals for others to avoid insulting GSC.
The situation may also have political aspects. GSC is a Ukrainian studio, and Reddit users found evidence in Platypus’ Discord server suggesting support for Russia during the conflict. While I haven’t been able to confirm these screenshots – the Discord server appears to have been cleaned after the takedown request – they reportedly included racial slurs and support for the Wagner Group, a Russian private military company accused of war crimes. The screenshots also showed multiple instances of the letter ‘Z’, which has become a public symbol of support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a Discord post where they apologized, Maewing stated they don’t support extremism, violence, or discrimination of any kind. They expressed sincere respect and appreciation for players and friends from all backgrounds and countries.
Currently, no other games like Stalker appear to have been removed from sale, and as far as I know, the developers of Stalker (GSC) haven’t taken action against games like Chernobylite or STALCRAFT: X.
