Power Rangers Reboot Star Reveals How Many Sequels Were Planned

The 2017 Power Rangers movie was intended to kick off a big new film series with a talented cast. Plans included potentially making six sequels, but those ideas were dropped after the movie didn’t perform well in theaters. Now, one of the actors from the film has shared details about how many sequels were originally planned and the number of films they had contracts for.

The recent Power Rangers movie featured a cast full of up-and-coming actors, including Dacre Montgomery as Jason, the Red Ranger. Montgomery shared with MovieWeb that everyone involved signed contracts for four movies, meaning at least three sequels were intended from the start. He described the experience as incredibly important for his career, being his first acting job after years of trying to break into the industry. He explained that Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, had a similar plan for it as they did with The Hunger Games franchise.

The 2017 Power Rangers Reboot Had Immense Potential

Montgomery shared his experiences working on the film and discussed plans for its future. He explained that there were ambitious ideas to expand the story and characters, and he greatly enjoyed working with the cast, including RJ. Unfortunately, the project didn’t make enough money to justify further investment from the studio, so it was cancelled. As he put it, ‘What can you do?’

You won’t believe it, but they’re revisiting Power Rangers again! From what I understand, Saban may have actually sold the rights, which is a bit wild. Honestly, though, I’m really optimistic about where things are headed. Power Rangers holds such a special place in so many of our hearts, and I have total faith that whoever takes on the project will do an amazing job. It was just such a fun show, and I’m excited to see what they do with it next.

The first movie told the story of how the Power Rangers began, with a surprising twist: Rita Repulsa was originally the Green Ranger. It also featured a fresh group of Rangers, along with completely new alien looks and designs for their Zords.

The movie featured a remarkably gifted cast with several actors who would go on to become famous, like Montgomery, Becky G, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, and RJ Cyler. It also hinted at a significant new character joining the next film: Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger.

If the Power Rangers movies had continued with three sequels, the Green Ranger would have definitely played a major role in the second film. The third movie might have featured the powerful Thunderzords and the villain Lord Zedd, but it’s hard to say where the story would have gone with a fourth film. It’s disappointing that we never got to see how the team would have expanded the franchise, as it represents a significant missed opportunity.
