Robert Pattinson is well-known for his role in the Twilight films and fans are excited to see him reprise his role as Batman. However, he’s also built a career appearing in a variety of movies, including several science fiction films like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17. There’s one sci-fi movie he made that many people have forgotten about, even though it’s considered a classic, and it’s currently available to watch for free.
Despite coming out in 2018, the film High Life hasn’t gotten much attention from general audiences. Directed by Claire Denis and starring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, and Andre Benjamin, among others, it didn’t do well in theaters but received strong praise from critics – earning an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its intricate story. Now, you can watch it for free on Tubi this month if you missed it in cinemas.
High Life Is a Strange, Surreal Sci-Fi Masterpieces More About Its Characters Than Big Action
The film High Life follows a group of criminals sentenced to death who are sent on a dangerous space mission to harvest energy from a black hole. Unbeknownst to them, they’re also part of a scientist’s (Binoche) bizarre experiment: she’s attempting to conceive a child in space through artificial insemination. Robert Pattinson plays Monte, who tries to stay on the right path but ultimately becomes the sole survivor of the mission and finds himself unexpectedly responsible for raising a child in the vastness of space.
While High Life has some unusual aspects, its strength lies in its focus on the personal experiences of its characters. The film explores the emotional toll on the crew, who know they’re considered expendable and may never return home. It also powerfully depicts the loneliness of space and how easily it can drive someone to the brink. Robert Pattinson delivers a standout performance as a man striving for goodness while facing an impossible situation. His portrayal of a single parent in such extreme isolation is both gritty and graceful. This isn’t a lighthearted film, but it’s beautifully crafted and profoundly thought-provoking – exactly what great science fiction should be.
High Life is available to stream for free on Tubi this April.
