After the disappointing performance of ‘The Predator’ in 2018, continuing the franchise was a risk. However, ‘Prey’ proved to be a major success, both with critics and audiences. Set in the past, it featured the creature hunting Native Americans and facing a strong female adversary. The enthusiastic response to ‘Prey’ led to a short animated film, ‘Killer of Killers,’ and now a full-length sequel, ‘Predator: Badlands.’ This new installment takes a surprising turn by focusing on the Predator as the main character and is set in the future.

We recently spoke with the director of Predator Badlands as he finished the film for its IMAX release – which premiered at the BFI IMAX in London, the UK’s largest screen! Our conversation covered everything from casting newcomer Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi to the level of violence and navigating censorship. We also discussed the decision to use CGI for the Predator instead of practical prosthetics, and a surprising detail: Elle Fanning was often carried like a backpack by Dimitrius during filming in New Zealand. It was a really interesting look behind the scenes, and the director, Dan, had some fascinating stories to share.
