‘Predator: Badlands’ Will Break a Major Franchise Tradition —But Fans Shouldn’t Be Worried

The new Predator movie, Predator: Badlands, is generating a lot of buzz, though some fans have expressed concerns. This seventh installment in the Predator series will uniquely feature a Predator as the main character. While this change is exciting to many, the film is also departing from the franchise’s long-held R rating, which it has maintained since 1987. However, director Dan Trachtenberg assures viewers this won’t be a toned-down, family-friendly version of Predator.

According to producer Ben Rosenblatt, the upcoming film *Predator: Badlands* is being targeted for a PG-13 rating. He explained that they’re aiming for a PG-13 experience that *feels* like an R-rated movie, hoping to reach a wider audience. Currently, the film hasn’t received a rating yet. Despite the potential for a lower rating, Rosenblatt suggests fans shouldn’t worry about a lack of intensity. The MPAA might allow more violence because the film features creatures rather than humans, and doesn’t prominently feature red blood.

Since our movie doesn’t feature any humans, we’ve avoided using red blood. We believe this will actually work in our favor, allowing us to create some incredibly intense and disturbing scenes – just not with the color red.

Why ‘Predator: Badlands’ PG-13 Rating Might Be a Good Thing

20th Century Studios

Most *Predator* movies, starting with the original in 1987, have been rated R, including recent installments like *Prey* and *Predator: Killer of Killers*, both directed by Dan Trachtenberg. If the upcoming *Badlands* receives a PG-13 rating, it would only be the second time the Predator has appeared in a PG-13 film, following *Alien vs. Predator* in 2004. Combining the *Alien* and *Predator* franchises in that film was divisive among fans, and the sequel, *Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem*, was subsequently rated R. However, the R-rating didn’t improve the film, as *Requiem* is often considered the weakest entry in both the *Alien* and *Predator* series.

I’ve been following the buzz around *Predator: Badlands*, and it seems like the variety of enemies – other aliens, robotic beings, and even Predators fighting each other with that glowing green blood – is what pushed it towards a PG-13 rating. The MPAA doesn’t have super strict rules, but a lot of blood usually means an R-rating. It’s interesting because it explains how something like *Star Wars* can have huge battles and still be PG-13 – they focus on the action without showing much blood, and that makes a difference!

The rating for ‘Predator: Badlands’ could attract a larger audience. The ‘Predator’ movies are typically rated R, but many teenagers enjoy them and can’t see them in cinemas. This new rating allows more people to buy tickets. ‘Badlands’ may have found a way to deliver the intense violence that dedicated ‘Predator’ fans want, while also making the film accessible to a wider audience, which could lead to higher ticket sales.
