Over the past few days, we’ve had an initial experience with The Outer Worlds 2, playing the first hour of the game. This brief encounter allowed us to gauge the gameplay, appreciate the upgraded visuals, and try out its role-playing game (RPG) elements. Although we’re not completely sold on it yet, our interest has definitely been piqued, leaving us eager to delve deeper into the game.
We’ve been enjoying our gaming sessions on the Xbox Series X (thanks to Microsoft), but we’re eagerly waiting to learn more about how games like the PS5 will perform and how the DualSense controller will be implemented. For now, based on our initial play, The Outer Worlds 2 seems to have a larger budget compared to its predecessor – which is quite fitting since that’s essentially what it is.
Initially, this game showcases stunning graphics, as our introductory mission unfolds on a space station against a backdrop of a moon-like planet in the distance, with asteroids scattered across the skyline. The vibrant colors and strategic design in both exterior and interior spaces make it effortless to immerse yourself in its futuristic environment.
Improvements in character models have been quite notable. The facial features are well-defined in these models, though they might not rival the best in facial animation. Compared to games like Starfield or even the initial release, it’s leagues ahead. It’s heartening to see that Obsidian has maintained such quality, as demonstrated in their RPG release Avowed, on Xbox earlier this year.
Among the aspects that truly stood out for us was the gameplay. In the initial installment, you might notice a reflection of its limited budget in the relatively basic and slower-paced gameplay, particularly during shooting sequences. However, the sequel significantly improves upon this, offering smooth and responsive gun mechanics, and more agile character movement as well.
The Outer Worlds 2 demo gave us the feel of an AAA game, whether we were moving around, firing weapons, or using melee attacks. We only got to test a pistol, rifle, and knife during the demo, so it’s unclear how the more exotic sci-fi weaponry will perform. However, the weapons felt substantial, and the combat was enjoyable and interactive.
As an enthusiastic supporter, it’s clear that players are diving deep into Obsidian games for their rich RPG elements, and I’m thrilled to say that The Outer Worlds 2 appears to be setting off on a strong footing. Immersed in the process of shaping my character, I’ve invested hours perusing diverse backstories and starting abilities – from mechanical prowess to eloquence that could charm the toughest of aliens.
In our brief gameplay session, we encountered several challenges such as locked doors, unattainable dialogue options, and impenetrable devices due to the chosen skills. Instead of engaging in combat with a group of mech security, we strategically influenced a security guard through dialog options, bypassing that potential fight.
Throughout our play, a recurring message read “This will be remembered,” following most of our statements. However, its true implications only become apparent as we delve deeper into the game. What unfolds as you immerse yourself remains to be seen, but it’s comforting to know that from the beginning, it seems that your decisions carry significant weight.
Certainly, we’re eager to dive into the PS5 version of the game, but the Series X variant, expected to be quite comparable to Sony’s version, showed promising performance. It offered a Quality setting at 30 frames per second and a Performance mode capped at 60. We opted for the Performance mode, and it ran smoothly without any significant lags. As previously stated, the graphics were outstanding.
Although we didn’t delve deeply enough into The Outer Worlds 2 during our short demo, it did indeed validate the key aspects we were eagerly anticipating. This new game appears to have a larger budget, building upon an original that was already highly praised. Enhanced gameplay, stunning visuals, and robust RPG elements are at the core of its design. In essence, The Outer Worlds 2 has the makings of another RPG masterpiece from Obsidian.
