Season 3 of Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated series, Primal, has returned to Adult Swim. The creator recently revealed he was hesitant to begin the new season with a major plot twist: bringing back Spear as a zombie. The second season ended with what seemed like a definitive conclusion, featuring the death of the main character, Spear. However, the surprise for Season 3 is that Spear has been resurrected as a zombie through ancient magic and is now wandering a desolate landscape.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Primal, recently spoke with ComicBook about the show’s third season. He admitted he was hesitant about turning Spear into a zombie, especially considering everything the character had already endured. While he liked the idea for the new season, he worried it might be a step too far and alienate fans – what he called a ‘jumping the shark’ moment.
Primal’s Creator Talks About Bringing Spear Back as a Zombie
Tartakovsky really liked the idea of Dexter becoming a zombie, but he worried about the story going too far or feeling forced. Luckily, those concerns didn’t last long because he was confident in the emotional direction of the story. He’s also been thinking about how the second season ended and what that means for fans as they anticipate the new season, hoping to surprise them with how everything ultimately unfolds.
Tartakovsky believes many viewers felt a mix of sadness and acceptance at the end of the second season, describing it as ‘bittersweet.’ He personally prefers endings that aren’t perfectly neat, and hopes fans will be pleasantly surprised by what’s to come. While remaining tight-lipped about future episodes, he intends for the conclusion of this season to provide emotional clarity, connecting both the Season 2 and Season 3 finales for viewers.
Primal’s Putting Together a Puzzle

Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Primal, wants the third season to be genuinely surprising for viewers. He doesn’t want fans trying to guess what will happen next. He aims to create a show where, initially, you might try to predict the plot, but quickly realize it’s impossible and instead just enjoy the ride. That’s what he hopes to achieve as both a creator and a viewer – he loves being surprised by stories because it allows him to fully immerse himself in the experience.
The initial episodes of the show deliberately feel mysterious and intriguing. The creator enjoys beginning stories with questions – like ‘What’s happening here? What’s the meaning of this fire? Who are these people, and why was there a fight?’ That’s part of what makes Primal so engaging. Because there’s no dialogue, viewers have to piece together the story visually and figure things out for themselves.
Season 3 of Primal is now airing on Adult Swim on Sunday nights, with episodes available to stream on HBO Max the following day. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
