Prime Adds A Cult Classic ‘80s Fantasy Movie That Inspired One of the Best Supernatural Shows of the 2010s

The 2010s saw a huge surge in popularity for shows about the supernatural and fantasy. Driven by long-running hits like Supernatural and popular vampire series such as The Vampire Diaries, audiences craved these kinds of stories on TV. Now, fans can stream the beloved 1980s fantasy film that inspired one of the best supernatural shows of all time, available on Prime Video.

For those who enjoyed the popular MTV show Teen Wolf, the original 1985 movie it’s based on is now available to stream on Prime Video, starting March 1st. The film, directed by Rod Daniel, stars Michael J. Fox as Scott Howard – the character who inspired Tyler Posey’s Scott McCall in the series. It’s a classic story about a shy teenager who unexpectedly discovers he’s a werewolf, changing his life forever.

Teen Wolf Is a Coming-Of-Age Story Filled With Supernatural Absurdity

During the 1980s, movies about growing up were incredibly popular, and Teen Wolf expertly tapped into that trend. It combined the typical high school experiences – like wanting to be popular and dealing with awkwardness – with a fun supernatural element. The movie cleverly uses the idea of becoming a werewolf as a funny way to represent the changes and challenges of puberty. It’s about learning to accept who you are, even the parts that feel strange or different, and overcoming everyday high school struggles. Beyond the funny werewolf moments – like Scott using his powers to become a star basketball player – Teen Wolf also boasts a fantastic ‘80s soundtrack and a memorable performance by Michael J. Fox. It perfectly captures the spirit of the decade with its lighthearted, feel-good vibe.

Despite receiving mixed reviews – 46% from critics and 52% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – the original Teen Wolf became a beloved ’80s classic. This led to a 1987 sequel, Teen Wolf Too, a 1986 animated series, and, most famously, the 2011-2017 MTV series, which you can currently stream on Netflix. That newer version of Teen Wolf was significantly darker and more focused on horror and the supernatural than its predecessors, becoming one of the most captivating supernatural teen dramas of recent years, despite some imperfections. Interestingly, the MTV series enjoys much higher ratings – 81% from critics and 86% from audiences – than the original film.

What’s New on Prime Video?

Subscribers can now enjoy films like Airport, both versions of Carrie (from 1976 and 2013), Resident Evil, all four Shrek movies, Super 8, and Twelve Monkeys.
