IO Interactive’s 007 First Light carefully balances respecting the classic James Bond stories and films with telling a new, original story about his early days. A recent developer diary introduces key characters like M (Priyanga Burford), Miss Moneypenny (Kiera Lester), and a new agent named Greenway. We also learn more about Q, who is portrayed by Alastair Mackenzie, known for his role in Andor.
During Pierce Brosnan’s time as James Bond, the character Q was generally portrayed as an older, somewhat exasperated inventor, but with a playful spark. The game 007 First Light offers a similar take on Q, but depicts him as a bit younger and more like a fun, approachable uncle – a role that the game’s creator, Mackenzie, envisioned for him based on his own childhood memories.
“First Light” essentially tells the story of how a character came to be. It features him as a younger, experienced professional who guides Bond in becoming an effective agent, acting as a teacher and mentor. The story also includes a significant amount of technology.
He tends to be playful and doesn’t always take things seriously, so Q has to keep him focused on his work and ensure he handles the gadgets responsibly. These devices are dangerous and deserve careful handling, and Q needs to be someone who can firmly enforce that level of care and command respect.
He’s not just a professor, teacher, and mentor – he has a playful side and is also a friend to Bond.
Mackenzie hinted that Q has some clever strategies ready to use when the time is right. He explained that Q’s success is due to his own considerable experience and skill.
Greenway acts as a mentor, but he doesn’t think Bond is suited for the 007 program. According to Martin Emborg, the narrative and cinematic director, Greenway sees Bond as someone who’s had some good fortune and should probably just continue as he is.
We learned a lot more, including how lead character artist Beatrice Harty designs villains like Bawma and creates in-game characters by scanning actors. Unfortunately, the interview didn’t reveal any clues about the identity of character 009.
The game 007 First Light will be available on May 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Keep an eye out for more news about the game. You can also watch a longer version of the gameplay reveal, featuring plenty of action with alligators!
