Prime Video is adding lots of new movies and shows each month. Recently, they’ve included classics like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Mad Max, and they’re now the only streaming service where you can watch a little-known, but interesting, 2023 sci-fi film that caused a stir before it even came out in theaters.
The sci-fi action movie The Creator, directed by Gareth Edwards, takes place in a future Los Angeles during a war between humans and artificial intelligence. It began streaming on Prime Video on December 20th and stars John David Washington as Joshua Taylor, an ex-special forces soldier tasked with finding and eliminating the creator of advanced AI.
The Creator Controversy Explained
The film The Creator caused immediate controversy when its first trailer was released in July 2023. While intended to generate excitement by showcasing the movie’s action and special effects, the trailer drew criticism for using actual footage from the devastating 2020 Beirut explosion – a disaster that killed over 200 and injured more than 6,000 – to depict a war-torn Los Angeles after a nuclear attack.
As a movie fan, I was pretty shocked when I heard about the controversy surrounding the trailer for The Creator. It all started when someone on Reddit spotted footage of the Beirut explosion, and it really blew up when the Corridor Crew guys discussed it on their VFX React series. People online were calling it unethical, and some even wanted to boycott the film! Thankfully, director Gareth Edwards chimed in on a Reddit AMA and explained that the explosion footage was only ever meant as a temporary visual reference for the VFX team, and it doesn’t actually appear in the movie itself. He also mentioned that using this kind of archival footage for that purpose is pretty common. Apparently, they just never took that specific clip out of the trailer before it was released.
Despite initial challenges, the film The Creator faced further debate after its release due to its perceived support of AI, a topic many creatives are currently protesting due to its fast and uncontrolled growth. However, the movie was generally well-received, earning scores of 67% from critics and 75% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Though the AI storyline sparked discussion, it presented a unique concept, and the film itself is a visually impressive experience with ambitious and beautiful world-building.
