For years, DreamWorks Animation has found success with its popular franchises, including films like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon, which have expanded into both movies and TV shows. However, many fans think one DreamWorks series, Madagascar, ended too soon. After three main films, the series shifted its focus to a spin-off centered around the hilarious group of secret agent penguins.
Released in 2014, Penguins of Madagascar unfortunately marked the end of the Madagascar movie series. It earned significantly less money at the box office than any other film in the franchise—about $200 million less—which led DreamWorks to decide against making any further Madagascar movies.
Even though Penguins of Madagascar didn’t do very well in theaters, it’s a really funny and enjoyable movie. While it doesn’t have the same standout characters as the original Madagascar, the humor is sharper and the villain is more engaging than in other films from the series. It might be one of DreamWorks Animation’s most overlooked gems, and now it’s even easier to watch with its addition to Prime Video.
Prime Video recently added the movie Penguins of Madagascar and the first two Madagascar films to its streaming selection. This gives Prime Video subscribers, particularly families with children, even more DreamWorks Animation content to choose from.
