There’s good news for fans hoping to see the DC universe created by Zack Snyder return. The recent deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery could make a revival possible. While James Gunn’s new DC Universe is still moving forward as planned, this deal offers a potential path for the Snyderverse to continue in some form.
Despite mixed reactions, Zack Snyder’s DC films still have a dedicated following. Considering his past work with Netflix, there’s a small chance his vision for the DC universe could continue on the streaming platform once Netflix has control of those characters. A recent development has made that possibility a little more likely.
Netflix Gets Another Major Win Against Paramount For Warner Bros. Discovery
A recent Bloomberg report revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery will turn down Paramount Global’s $108.4 billion offer, even though it was higher. Bloomberg stated that Warner prefers a deal with Netflix because it offers more value, is more certain, and has better terms. Warner Bros. Discovery has now officially rejected Paramount’s offer, confirming the report and explaining their decision on Wednesday, December 17th.
Netflix sent a letter to Warner Bros. shareholders following the rejection of Paramount’s takeover attempt. Netflix characterized Paramount’s offer as unrealistic, questioning how it would be funded. Photos included with the letter featured posters for both Netflix and Warner Bros. films, including the 2017 movie Justice League, and highlighted DC content alongside other successful titles.
The letter highlights some of the world’s most popular shows and movies, mentioning the DC Universe alongside Warner Bros. hits like Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory, and Netflix successes such as Squid Game and Bridgerton. Now that Warner has officially turned down Paramount’s latest offer, it’s becoming a little easier to see a potential future for the DC Snyderverse.
DC’s Snyderverse Return Now Hinges On Two Factors
Now that Paramount doesn’t seem to be an obstacle, there are two main hurdles for bringing back the Snyderverse. First, Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. is still a ways off from being finalized. The deal needs to go through a lengthy review process by regulators, and Netflix estimates this could take anywhere from 12 to 18 months.
If Netflix gains control of DC’s characters, the fate of Zack Snyder’s cinematic universe depends on whether Netflix wants to continue it as a streaming series. With James Gunn developing a new DC Universe for theaters, there wouldn’t be room for Snyder’s films in cinemas anymore. Plus, Netflix recently cancelled some of Snyder’s projects, making a future for his DC vision uncertain.
