Fans of action-packed shows have recently received disappointing news with the cancellation of two series after only one season. While Jensen Ackles might return to the *The Boys* universe with both *The Boys* and its new prequel, *Vought Rising*, he won’t be playing LAPD detective Mark Meachum, as that show didn’t last long. Similarly, Daniel Dae Kim’s role as intelligence operative David Jung is over, as the show it was on won’t be renewed for another season.
Prime Video has been making some changes lately, renewing a few shows while canceling others. The Bosch spin-off Ballard is getting a second season, and viewers can expect more of We Were Liars and Overcompensating. However, Motorheads won’t be returning for another season.
As a big fan of both shows, I was really surprised to hear *Butterfly* and *Countdown* weren’t getting another season. *Countdown*, especially, did incredibly well – Jared Padalecki’s show stayed in the U.S. Top 10 for over a month after the first season ended! Both shows actually made it into Nielsen’s Top 10 originals – *Countdown* peaked at eight, and *Butterfly* even hit number six when all the episodes dropped at once. Apparently, the decision came down to how well they performed *globally*, and sadly, it wasn’t quite enough, according to *Deadline*.
What Were ‘Countdown’ and ‘Butterfly’ About?

When *Countdown* first aired, it looked promising. Starring the well-loved Jared Padalecki, the show’s story revolved around…
When a Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum is brought in to help a secret task force. This team, made up of undercover agents from various law enforcement agencies, begins investigating the killing. However, the search for the murderer quickly reveals a much larger and dangerous conspiracy, starting a desperate effort to protect the city and its millions of residents.
The show received negative reviews from critics, earning only a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although viewers seemed to enjoy it more, with a 63% audience score, it proved to be a polarizing series that didn’t attract enough long-term viewers to satisfy Prime Video.
Butterfly was an action-packed show about David Jung, a former U.S. spy living in South Korea. His quiet life is disrupted when a dangerous and ruthless agent from a shadowy organization is sent to assassinate him, forcing him to confront his past.
Although *Butterfly* didn’t attract as many viewers as *Countdown*, it was a much stronger show overall. Critics and audiences both generally liked it – with approval ratings of 68% and 84% respectively – and it really delivered on its potential with a great cast including Kim, Reina Hardesty, Piper Perabo, and Louis Landau. If it had continued, a second season likely would have gained even more viewers, building on the positive reviews.
Lots of fantastic TV shows needed time to find their footing, but unfortunately, many new series don’t get that opportunity anymore. Both of these shows had ideas for where their stories were going in future seasons, but they won’t get to explore them. This type of cancellation makes it harder for viewers to take a chance on new shows, and it’s understandable why so many struggle to attract enough viewers to earn a second season.
