Mike Flanagan’s upcoming series offers a fresh take on the classic tale. It’s not a remake of earlier versions, but a completely new interpretation.
Stephen King‘s novel, published in 1974, is one of his most well-known books. It helped launch his career as a leading horror writer and has been adapted for the screen multiple times. Actress Heather Graham, who stars in a new adaptation of Carrie, recently shared that this version will update the story to include current issues like social media bullying and school shootings.
Graham said he’s watched the first three episodes of the new version of the story and thought they were excellent.
What to Expect From Carrie?
Although she didn’t reveal any plot details, she did share that the new adaptation of Carrie will address contemporary issues like social media bullying and school shootings. She believes the creator successfully maintains the core elements that made the original story so powerful.
The actress recently praised director Mike Flanagan while promoting her new movie, They Will Kill You. She described him as incredibly talented and a genuinely kind person, adding that everyone who works with him quickly becomes a devoted fan. She called him “amazing.”
She shared that the atmosphere on set was incredibly emotional, with everyone, even the seasoned actors, in tears by the end of filming. Graham described the director as someone who fosters a loving environment, explaining that despite the often dark subject matter, everyone felt a strong sense of warmth and connection.
Mike Flanagan Is Stephen King’s Frequent Collaborator
Mike Flanagan is a truly gifted horror director who prioritizes compelling characters and stories over cheap thrills. He creates fear by expertly weaving together realistic, well-developed characters and situations rooted in relatable experiences like trauma, grief, and family issues. This makes him an ideal choice to direct a remake of Carrie.
The filmmaker is known for acclaimed limited series such as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. He’s also frequently worked with Stephen King, previously adapting stories like Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck. Currently, he’s developing a television adaptation of The Dark Tower alongside a new take on The Mist.
Stephen King has given his approval to the changes made to his work, and Katee Sackhoff recently hinted that King has complete faith in the adapter, even offering access to all of his source material.
I’m so excited for the new adaptation! Kate Sackhoff hasn’t revealed a ton, but she did say to expect things to get intense – lots of ‘fire’ and even ‘some blood,’ which, honestly, I’m not surprised about considering that unforgettable prom scene with the pig blood. She seems really confident in it, saying we’re all going to love it because Mike Flanagan is a master of smart, psychological horror. He really knows how to get under your skin!
Carrie is expected to premiere on Prime Video in October 2026.
