Prime Video‘s returning spy series accomplishes its mission.
Prime Video is adding a compelling new spy thriller to its already impressive lineup of shows for 2026. The streaming service is known for hits like Invincible, The Boys, Scarpetta, and Young Sherlock, all of which have become popular worldwide after premiering or returning with new seasons this year. Now, another exciting series is joining that group. This espionage show – a genre Prime Video has successfully tackled with titles like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Mr. & Mrs. Smith – is back after several years, and its highly anticipated return has been a major success.
According to FlixPatrol, Citadel is now the second most popular TV show on Prime Video worldwide. This is great news considering the first season was reportedly the most expensive spy series ever made, costing around $300 million. The show, executive produced by the directors of Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers, initially launched on April 28, 2023, with two episodes, followed by weekly releases until all six were available. Now, for season 2, all seven episodes dropped at once on May 6th, and it’s clearly paying off.
Just one day after its second season launched, Citadel has quickly become a huge hit for Prime Video, ranking among its most popular shows worldwide. It’s already surpassed other successful series like Invincible, Young Sherlock, Scarpetta, and Fallout in viewership. Currently, only The Boys, Prime Video’s biggest show which is in its final season, is more popular. However, because Citadel was released so recently, it has the potential to become the most-watched show on the platform.
Even though Citadel is a global hit, it’s surprisingly not the most-watched show on Prime Video in any single country right now. However, it’s currently a top 10 show in an impressive 48 countries! In 16 of those – including the UK, New Zealand, Brazil, and the United States – Citadel is the second most popular series on Prime Video. In fact, it only trails behind The Boys, both domestically and worldwide.
Viewership numbers for Citadel season 2 are expected to vary during its first week on Prime Video, but so far, even the lowest-rated episode on IMDb has a strong score of 7.4. The highest rating is 7.9, suggesting a consistently good season. The season begins with Richard Madden’s Mason Kane, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Nadia Sinh, and Stanley Tucci’s Bernard Orlick in hiding, but they quickly join forces with new allies to defeat the villain Paulo Braga (Gabriel Leone) and his mind-control technology, which turns people into assassins. A third season of Citadel has not been announced yet.
