Netflix’s animated show BoJack Horseman is unique, but a new comedy series coming to Prime Video is the most similar show available on any streaming service. Called Kevin, it’s created by Joe Wengert, a producer on Big Mouth, and actress Aubrey Plaza, and stars Jason Schwartzman as the main character.
This animated comedy follows a cat going through a midlife crisis after his owners split up. It’s a funny but emotionally resonant show about the challenges animals face – both mental and physical – as they search for a sense of belonging while living at a pet rescue center.
Aubrey Plaza is known for her work in many films and TV shows, but her upcoming series, Kevin, is special: she’s a lead writer and co-creator. The show is expected to feature Plaza’s signature dry wit and understanding of social awkwardness, combined with the crude humor and well-developed characters of Big Mouth.
Prime Video’s New Comedy Series Kevin Is Its Replacement For BoJack Horseman
When Prime Video releases the new animated sitcom Kevin on April 20th, viewers will likely notice strong similarities to BoJack Horseman. The show is a darkly funny and often outrageous comedy about animals who can talk and walk, and who are dealing with their own personal struggles while living alongside humans.
Although Kevin lives on the East Coast, far from BoJack’s West Coast setting, his world feels surprisingly similar to the show. A clip from the Prime Video series shows a version of Queens where cats and dogs live and behave just like humans.
Joe Wengert and Aubrey Plaza’s new TV show is sure to have some truly unique and creative aspects. However, it’s clear Amazon also recognized the potential for a show similar to the hugely popular and critically acclaimed BoJack Horseman, and likely sees this as a way to fill that void in their streaming lineup.
Fans of BoJack Horseman might notice a familiar voice – Amy Sedaris, who played Princess Carolyn, voices a supporting character named Brandi in this show. This connection highlights the similarities in themes and style between the two series.
Kevin’s Title Character Is Similar To BoJack In More Ways Than One
The main thing Kevin and BoJack Horseman have in common will likely be the personalities of their main characters. While Kevin’s protagonist probably won’t be as unlikeable as BoJack often is, they’ll share many similar traits.
As a movie buff, I’ve noticed something really interesting about BoJack and Kevin. They’re both deeply flawed characters – total neurotic messes, honestly – and they’re clearly going through midlife crises. They just react instead of thinking things through, which gets them into trouble. What really hits home, though, is that they both feel this deep, underlying anxiety about, well, everything. They end up attracting other ‘animal’ characters – people who are just as lost and trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in. It’s a really relatable dynamic, seeing all these misfits searching for a sense of belonging.
If you’re anticipating Kevin to be a typical adult animated comedy, think BoJack Horseman instead. This show promises a surprisingly profound exploration of its main character, often balancing heartbreaking moments with humor – even more so than many live-action dramas.
What To Expect From Kevin On Prime Video
The new animated sitcom, Kevin, has a lot of potential to be a standout show. Jason Schwartzman will likely bring his signature brand of offbeat comedy and thoughtful introspection to the series, while Aubrey Plaza will provide a contrasting emotional core as the voice of Kevin’s previous owner, Dana.
The show will premiere with eight episodes, each around the length of a typical sitcom, all available to stream on Monday, April 20th. If it’s popular with viewers and receives good reviews, we’re hoping to produce more episodes next year.
